Don't stress about the Donald - but it is troubling that acting like a racist jackass is a good way to get the support of the american people. here are my thoughts.

1. He likely won't be president
2. If he becomes president he won't act like a racist jackass
3. He's only acting like a racist jackass to get votes.
4. President of US is not a dictator - he still needs the support of the house and senate
5. He won't be bombing muslims any more than the last guy and the guy before him and he won't be building a wall and he won't stop immigration - although he might crack down on ILLEGAL immigration - which is fair, because it is illegal.

Basically it all boils down to the fact that he's just acting like a goof to get votes. Every politician acts and lies to get votes - even in Canada(but our recent acting liar was doing it in a positive way and not a negative way)

As much as I hate 99% of your articles and everything you say in them, I have to admit that you are good at what you do; saying the things you say to get a reaction. Touché Tanner.

MINUS: This Donald Trump thing used to be funny. Now it's scary, both because it's happening and because he gets talked about so much it's becoming normalized.

What does it say about us when half our people might vote for a racist, xenophobic, fear mongering bully who cynically runs his campaign on the premise of getting the "stupid" vote?

How do the people who support him not realize the insulting way in which their vote is being courted? And how can anyone who is a real Republican be more concerned with being right or following the party line than in doing the right thing?

For those interested in what can happen when a demagogue runs and wins the Presidency, please acquire and read a copy of the Phillip Roth book The Plot Against America.

Look, I'm no Trump fanboy. But James, you're Canadian and have your own set of dubious problems I won't lecture you about.

I was at Coachella this year and was near the usual large group of young people from Mexico. They started chanting derogatory things about Trump. Then Lauren Mayberry form the Scottish band Chvrches, who I think highly of, started ranting about how we couldn't be stupid enough to elect Trump, much like you just did. I would feel the same way if they were talking about Hillary, Cruz, or Bernie.

Maybe we should all understand when we're guests in a country that we should be respectful and a little quieter. It's much like when you go to an opposing arena for a hockey game like I did last night in Ontario (CA). I cheered for my team. But I was respectful to the home team because I was in their home. We're not really interested in being called stupid or anything like that by people from other countries on our own soil.

MINUS: The way people are blowing an 18 year old's performance at a single international tournament way way way out of proportion reminds me of Justin Pogge.

James,

While on the subject of language (and I'm with you in not being a fan of "impactful"), I would also argue that anybody who uses the word "legit" as opposed to the proper term of "legitimate" should probably not be commenting on lexical semantics...

If people are unable to pronounce the last two syllables to use the correct word, it begs the question: what is in your mouth that is stopping you...?

hhhhhaahaha. Legit has become an accepted slang term though. It is in the dictionary but so is selfie.

As for syllables, I hate anybody who has more than a two syllable name. Nobody is important enough for that. If they don't like to have their name short-formed I just call them Jack or Jill. I went to accounting school with a guy named Tudor Banea III and yes he was an arrogant jackass and yes I did call him Jack because he always referred to himself using his full name. Calling him Jack drove him nuts. It was pretty great.

It's funny that instead of some potential self reflection due to the actions of some people that most likely realize Americas political landscape has a serious effect on the rest of the world, you think they should just keep quiet. Americas political decisions affect those people in a very tangible way.

Even if their tactics were in poor taste, voicing political concerns in public space about a racist xenophobe potentially being the president of the USA has less than nothing to do with showing some "respect" at a hockey game

Political discourse is essential to a free society. And that doesn't change when we cross borders. And those that it does aren't places I wanna go.

And your attempt to marginalize James' statement by referring to it as a "rant", missed the mark. It was very rational, and more importantly bang on

Fact is, its a nightmare and surreal that a fear monger who caters to the lowest common denominator could be elected to the highest political office in the land

Maybe the best. Even among people who acheieve best of the best status, its pretty rare to match your best work in yiur 70s and 80s as Roth has. I still prefer Salinger and Delillo but Roth is fantastic.
