Just to reply to everyone:

I see what you all mean in that it doesn't make much sense for the Leafs and it's definitely a fair point. I'd probably feel the same way if I were in your shoes.

Just thought I'd try and bring and interesting angle into the draft win.

Well you need a goalie...what would you toss back to us for Rask?

Or would you wait to acquire/draft that as well? Still a young goalie.

You would be trading Marners best years for Bergerons worst years though.
- smellmyfinger

yeah, see above. Totally get it.

To be honest, I forget how "old" he is sometimes

First player I remember watching as an 18 yo in the NHL. (frank) I'm getting old

I'd absolutely take Bergeron for Marner.

But I'm a big Berge fan, and I like the sure thing as opposed to the risk.

So in a year where the nhl overreacts and attempts to discourage tanking by changing the lottery, the team with the least intent on winning games, wins the lottery as well creating the potential for a large negative impact on teams that werent trying to lose.

A lottery win in the same city that repeatedly condemned tanking a year ago, while lauding their team for committing the same act the very next season.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out what WPG or CLB would take. JVR + TOR 1st 2017 + TOR 2nd 2017? Now that's probably a pretty tempting package for someone... our 1st next year is (I'm totally guessing) an 8th or 9th overall probably, and our 2nd would be pretty impressive at that position too.

I'm not even sure I'd do this... that would be an expensive price.

As someone else mentioned earlier, we probably use JVR to snag a good defenseman instead, maybe thru draft.

- --Lamp--

I have a feeling that they stay put. We don't want to give up our 1st next year and end up with another Seguin situation.

Tanking and rebuilding are the same thing. You use the word "rebuild" when you like the team you're talking about, and "tank" when you don't like them.

We've tried the retool-on-the-fly thing for a long time now. How would you have approached the hand that Shanahan had?

Note: I'd say this about any team who "tanked" or "rebuilt" or whatever you want to call it. Buffalo last year did same; I've never had any problem with what they did. They needed to remake their team, and they needed good picks to do it.

Quit whining.

Does anyone think that drafting Mathews changes the possibility of stamkos signing with the leafs in the off season?
- elpidio1975

Yeah cause nobody needs a Stamkos Mathews 1 2 punch.

All I remember is our fans complaining we didn't tank properly last year, and for the last several years. Why do you think we complain about long gone fringe players like Deveraux.

Not sure what your point is? Are you surprised that the team with the best odds to win the lotto actually won the lotto? Are you surprised that a GM who knew his team had no shot this year traded for any assets he could get that would help in the future? Or are you surprised that fans are happy that their team gets the first pick?
