My guess is you tell him the Gretzky-Messier 1-2 punch won 4 Stanley Cups together.

But what the hell do I know?

I'm just a simple Leafs fan with a 13" weiner who can lick his eyebrows.

Tell Mrs. Prince Wedgie says hello.

Sure, if you were able to circumvent the salary cap. There wasn't one, when the Oilers were winning Cups. By the time the Leafs are ready to compete for the playoffs, and make a run in the playoffs, Stamkos will be in his early 30's. We'll still be paying him $10 million per season, with Matthews, Marner and Nylander needing major raises if they become young stars. They'll be begging for cap relief by then.

Shanahan says no matter where they picked, it wouldn't have made an impact on the upcoming free agency.

AKA "We've already got an agreement via Stamkos' mother's dogwalker's cousin's babysitter..."

Mib's notion that the leafs don't need stamkos if they get mathews is stupid.

If you can improve your team, you do it.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to totally disagree.

By all means, he looks like he could be a stud, but he hasn't played a single game in the NHL.

Can you and everyone else on here honestly say you would not trade Marner straight up for Bergeron?

If not, that's cool, I just disagree.

- RickJames77

Not a chance, in 5 years when Bergeron is retired you'll being watching Marner rack up points.

Marner alone would be an over payment.
- the_eye

The problem with a Marner<-->Bergeron trade is a point-in-time difference.

Would I trade Marner for a young Bergeron who I knew would grow up into the Bergeron of today? Almost certainly yes--knowing for sure that you're getting a Bergeron thru prime years is nearly as good as it gets.

But Leafs don't need Bergeron at all right now--not the right type of acquisition. Bruins would have takers on contending teams for sure, though.

bergeron is 30 2 or 3 years of being elite left then will start to decline when the leafs will compete marner is 18 and should only get better so for the leafs marner is much more valuable then bergeron

If he's 35+ (I just assume all Devils forwards are) then deal
- walshyleafsfan

New day for the Devils, if Elias retires there is no 35+ players on the roster. Cammalleri at 33 is the closest.

I honestly would not, as a Leafs fan.

It's not about talent.

It is about timing.

For the Leafs, hell no.

Man, I wonder what it would take to do the opposite: try to get the 2nd as well (or 3rd).

Would JVR + Pitt 1st + TOR 2nd 2017 do it? (I'm assuming "no", but not sure what else would need to be added). Would WPG or CBJ even consider something like that?

- --Lamp--

This is what I would like to see happening but I have a feeling that Jets and Columbus will ask for more than that.

Just to reply to everyone:

I see what you all mean in that it doesn't make much sense for the Leafs and it's definitely a fair point. I'd probably feel the same way if I were in your shoes.

Just thought I'd try and bring and interesting angle into the draft win.

Well you need a goalie...what would you toss back to us for Rask?

Or would you wait to acquire/draft that as well? Still a young goalie.

Does anyone think that drafting Mathews changes the possibility of stamkos signing with the leafs in the off season?

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out what WPG or CLB would take. JVR + TOR 1st 2017 + TOR 2nd 2017? Now that's probably a pretty tempting package for someone... our 1st next year is (I'm totally guessing) an 8th or 9th overall probably, and our 2nd would be pretty impressive at that position too.

I'm not even sure I'd do this... that would be an expensive price.

As someone else mentioned earlier, we probably use JVR to snag a good defenseman instead, maybe thru draft.

Stamkos will sign a 7 year contract.

Matthews' contract will be artificially restricted by the CBA for the next 7 years.

With all due respect, you have no franking idea what you are talking about.
