I don't know why Gudas wouldn't be in their longer range plan being he is only 25.

I liked him more and more as the season wore on.

Exactly!

Someone behind me was complaining about Gost coming off after that and her boyfriend was saying he was a rookie and was confused. No, dipwad, he just got slewfooted and would like to know his leg is still attached.

look at his skates dude, he is getting ready for a hit, ghost makes an adjustment, his skate starts on the left side of ghosts body, and by the time the collision happens his skate would be on the far right side of ghosts whole body. he definitely extended his left leg out when he realized ghost wasnt staying on the boards so he could rock him. youre telling me you dont think ovie was relishing the opportunity to paste this new rookie defensemen who he heard a lot about going in this series?
- sjk540

I did. Every player turns their body to go into a hit because you don't lead into a hit with your face, and you don't skate sideways. His leg turns, but it doesn't stick out.

Of course he wanted to lay a huge hit on Ghost; who wouldn't? Just because he went for a big hit doesn't equal him making an intent to injure the leg.

But if he's able to freeze time and reposition his leg, at top speed, between the goal line and the boards, then he deserves some sort of medal.

But keep wearing the O&B glasses, they serve you well.

I'd sign him for 2 years. Morin may be able to replace him, but he's not yet, and maybe never be. He's a nice bottom-pair player. But $3M per for 2 years is rough.
- jmatchett383

And that's why I would do a 1 year deal. If Morin isn't ready or another prospect isn't ready they I revisit Gudas.

I think Gudas can go to arbritration so if Flyers QO at 1.4 I would guess Gudas would come in at 3. So your probably looking at 2-2.5 fo rthe year. 2 years at 5 million? Maybe I do that as I could possibly move him at the trade deadline

A one year deal would make him a UFA next summer. That's bad asset management.

Once he constantly stopped running out of position for big hits and getting suspended, he looked like a complete different player. Really used his size and strength to his advantage, and had a nice little scoring spree as well. Hopefully next year, we see a full season of that gudas.

Well, as soon as Alex Pieternagelo hits the UFA market, I'm sure the Flyers will go after him.

However, seeing as guys like Pietrangelo never (rarely, if ever) hit the UFA market, I don't get all of the crying. Not singling you out, but people seem to act like it's a quick fix to get a big, mobile, skilled defenseman and the Cup is ours.

- jmatchett383

No quick fix at all and I love Hextall's long term plan. is it guaranteed to work? No. but neither did the quick fix plan the Flyers have employed over the last 30 years.

Dont have much of an issue with the OV hit on Ghost. It's borderline to me that he sticks his leg out but no point in complaining about it.

Im surprised Schenn has a hearing but Chimera doesnt.

1 year closer to Provorov , Sanheim, Morin being here..

Ok.

Is Gudas going to have that big a market that you couldn't resign him? If you were to lose Gudas does it hurt that bad?

some of the UFA dmen 17-18

Kulikov
Franson
Alzner
Bruns
Shattenkirk
Hedman
Del Zotto

Those are probably the best of the bunch.

Everyone else will probably be in the Gudas area.

Ovechkin charges from multiple counties over to deliver 80% of his hits. But he gets a pass, because hypocrisy rules over the stars of the league. That's the point.

Also, this is a knee on knee.

- Giroux_Is_God

he blatantly leads with his left leg as he approaches gost. total intent to take him out with his leg. end of story. but no call, because you know, ovechkin.

It seemed like as soon as he was named to the Czechia World Cup team he settled down and stopped working so hard to prove himself. He just played hockey and it turned out he's not half bad.

The point is that, especially as a younger player, you tack years onto the deal to get the cap hit down. Get guys on your team at good cap hit, get them playing better than their cap hits, and worry about log jams when they happen...Gudas signed to a good cap hit will be an attractive trade chip

That is the basis behind cap management

I didn't even realize that correlation to him being named to the world cup team and cleaning his game up. I think he has potential to be a really good 3rd pairing man for our future group. Like I said, if he keeps using his size and strength to his advantage, he can become an even more solid dman.

So he's able to change the direction and orientation of his knee, skating at top OV speed, in about a 4-foot distance?

I need to take a refresher course on Newtonian Mechanics.

- jmatchett383

You might need a refresher course on hockey if you think throwing a hit involves having your feet wider than shoulder width apart.

Yes, because the best way to throw a hit is to have your body standing fully upright and not braced in any way, shape, or form.

I mean, wait. Stupid Ovechkin, clearly throws his leg out 2 feet to hit Ghost in the knee. SUSPEND HIM FOREVER!

Better? I don't want to view things any differently thou your holiness.

I get that.

Next season your probably going to see Gostisbehere to a long term deal. Not sure they do a bridge deal with him. Probably something that Morgan Reilly got.

Longest I would go is two years at 5 million then. I guess I am not keen on tying money up in a guy I think can be replaced as a 3rd pairing guy.

There were marginal hits on both sides....I agree it is weird that one team got hearings for it...but I thought the whole series was officiated poorly and was quite annoying. It was a fun series to watch and there were so many weak calls and non calls. Like a random stick to knee gets a hooking penalty and then a guy gets clearly boarded for nothing. Was frustrating to watch from either side

Best way to throw a hit is to lower you center of gravity a tad with a solid base. i.e. "athletic position". Knees slightly bent, feet shoulder width apart, ready for impact.

If Ovechkin has his legs any farther apart, he's doing a straddle.

Funny thing is the hit Schenn is being reviewed for I thought wasnt bad compared to I think the one on Richards in game 1 or 2 where it looks like he launches himself.

Next time, I'm sure OV will bring a measuring tape with him to ensure that his knees do not go past shoulder length.

He's even leaned with his weight on his right leg, bracing for left leg impact, as he goes in from the goal line
