Based on both. The Flyers had the third fewest RS points among the teams that have gone/will go out in the first round. So the Wild will pick 15th, the Red Wings 16th and the Flyers 17th.

Another great result from the new playoff format. Flyers are forced to play the top seed in the east, but also forced to pick after Detroit who played the 6th best team in the east.

Traded Rinaldo for a 3rd.

Traded Vinny and Luke Schenn for a 3rd and some pre-pubescent boy.

Does this piss you off as much as it does me, 2Real? I am pissed.

yea but finding a player like rinaldo is easy we have had many of them in the past

You can't teach size.

He had 27 points in 49 games, including 9 goals, in his draft year. But he did have 141 penalty minutes. That is amazing. And he wasn't just a first rounder. He was #16 overall.

A fun game is going to hockeydb and looking at Flyers picks under the previous GMs and seeing what garbage players were selected solely because of PIMs. Hint: a disturbing number.

- Mononoke

dont get me wrong. his size and aggression definitely impacts a game. but this is a first rounder that is hovering around 16 career goals in 220 plus games. give him credit in a sick way for doing exactly what he is supposed to do, but its not like he is a lucic type who scores as well.

hopefully sheary who is about the size of his thigh can just scoot around him and pot a couple.

I wasn't crazy about trading Schenn for a third but we have to move Vinny out so I made myself okay with it.

Nobody knows the Flyers better than Meltzer. No question, it wasn't Giroux's best series or best last quarter of the regular season, but there's also no question that he's one of the best at his position. One area where he really stood out this year was faceoff's. All of that being said, no doubt he's undersized and is often muscled off the puck in the corner.
Let's be real honest here....nobody expected the Flyers to make the playoffs and it showed during the first half of the regular season. Hextall standing pat on deadline day ensured he was comfortable with either scenario - a post season miss or post season birth. They played playoff hockey since January and their schedule during the final 8-10 games was absolutely terrible. You had a team that barely squeaked into the post season play the team that locked up the President's Trophy before any other team locked a playoff birth.
Those were probably the 6 most awful playoff games I have ever seen as a fan however that series served as a measuring stick to see exactly where the Flyer were to the NHL's best. 6 goals in 6 games isn't going to cut it and if it weren't for Neuvirth, you could argue that they would have been swept. Several players were invisible for most of the entire season...Read and Streit come to mind. You can also argue Voracek as he'll be earning his 8+ mil next year for 8 years! If Philly has any problems, it isn't #28.
As always Bill, your analysis is second to none.

Rinaldo was drafted #178 overall in the 6th round.

Pavelski was rafted #205 overall in the 7th round.

2Real, I want the next Pavelski. We need to draft skill and find one.

i wasnt a fan of luke schenn as a player. i dont think a third is that far off of his value. assuming you can isolate the fact that he was the return for JVR. then add in the fact that you also got rid of vinny. i thought it was a great and savvy move.

Schenn ended up behind the corpse of Rob Scuderi on the Kings depth chart. A 3rd was very decent value.

We HAVE fixed it....we replaced Vanek (Giroux), Pomminville (Voracek), Stafford (Simmonds), and Tyler Myers (Gothesbiere) with Eichel, Reinhart, O'Reilly and Ristolenin. One more of season tweak and I see us in the ECF next year
- Ripped Fuel

In what world has Stafford ever scored 30 goals and Tyler Myers scored 46 points? Those comparisons are garbage and you know it. It is laughable that you think one tweak will turn a bottom feeder into a playoff team...... Buffalo needs a lot of tweaks.....

Rinaldo is an NHL player*. Whatever you think about him, there is no guarantee that 3rd round pick will become an NHL player.

Could you imagine this Caps series with a player like Zac? Could've changed the whole series, man.

For me the difference maker (besides the obvious Neuvirth) in this series could have been Jake Voracek. He was handling the puck like a grenade, making just dumb passes and taking ill advised shots. If could have hit the net on the pp a few times things would have been different not to mention all the dumb penalties he took. He truly looked lost and his salary is way out of line if he plays like this. It is obvious to me the refs do not like him because the Caps high sticked him, tripped him and never a call but all he had to do was look at a guy and got two. If anyone is on the trade block it should be #93. 28-10-17 make a great first line, Schenn way better on lw

I would have loved Zac running Ovechkin, it still infuriates me he got away with nothing for running Couter. Flyers need a tough guy that can actually play, a guy with huge energy, bring back Mad Dog Kelly

the reason why pavelski fell so low was that people questioned his size i doubt that would happen this time around again

Matt Martin is a UFA. Isles 4th line seems to do a good job.

Whatever it takes to neutralize guys taking liberties. Lucic would be great even though I don't like him but if he was a Flyer we would all love him. You need the skill to win but you also need the grit. Ovechkin should have been pummelled but we had no one to do it.
