The risk of Umby getting hurt outweighs any advantage that might happen from replacing read with him. - Gnrlbot
Is it really that much of a risk? If it gives them a better chance to win a hockey game they need to do it. Who's to say they will even be a playoff team next year with or without Umberger's inflated cap hit? |

Have you seen Umberger skate? His size is meaningless if he can't keep up with the Caps.

I hope Stolarz becomes the better goaltender. Murray getting shutouts in playoff games in MSG, while the Flyers were scared to death to start Stolarz in the second game of back to backs. - PLindbergh31
I think the difference is Fluery (their #1 was hurt), our number 1 was not. While Pittsburgh was fighting for 2nd place in the division, we were fighting for 8th place in the playoffs.
I don't think you take a chance on a rookie in that situation. Imagine if the Flyers spotted Stolarz a spot game and they lost which cost them the playoffs.
I think they are 2 different situations. |

My point is I doubt they're making that decision on Murray's small sample size of NHL work to date.
Andrew Hammond who? - Scoob
Hammond was a flash in the pan. Look at his AHL numbers.
Murray had success in the AHL. I have more faith in Murray |

You think Cousins is faster?
I would argue Umberger is better skater than Cousins
I just fear he would get hurt and then no buyout |

I think the hurt/buyout thing is a little ridiculous. Thats not for another month and a half and also, if he is hurt too bad they can just LTIR him. I also think that if they require teams to keep players they signed to NMCs, there will be a special buyout window similar to the amnesty buyout window when the cap went down. |

Umberger may be a bit faster than Cousins, but I'll take Cousins grit and ability to get under opponents skin any day over anything that RJ brings to the table. But yeah, either way, no point in risking the buyout.

Agreed, but it's far too early, imho of course, to be talking of moving MAF for a kid who's only on his second cup of coffee in the bigs. |

I know.
The Flyers will have goalie decisions next season.
I am still not in favor of giving Mason something in the 6 million range. That's where I think he will be asking around. |

Those lines look very ineffective tbh. Gagner and Raffl have looked good together.
Also, assuming the 3rd line tonight is Mcdonald-Cousins-Read, that line has the potential to cause some havoc and draw some penalties. - pinkfloydfreak
Well losing your second line Center with a Center thin line up is going to make any lines put together look pretty ineffective. I think it's important to distribute whatever Centers you have through out the lineup. Raffl going head to head with Kuznetsov or Backstrom is not going to go well. PEB is going to add a lot more value than Gagner in the cycle game/checking role that line should be playing. |

They definitely will have a big decision to make. Both guys are up and they can probably only afford one of them. |

Yeah I hear you. Only reason why I'm comparing the situation at all is because they were drafted in the same draft, I believe Murray went 38 picks after Stolarz did. - PLindbergh31
Flyers missed out on Lundqvist, too, for 5 rounds.
Man, egg on the Flyers' face. |

Almost as good of an NHL start to a career as Patrick Lalime, and not quite as good as Jim Carey. Definitely a better career start than Dominik Hasek, though. |

Maybe since he's a back up at best,
Other teams will low ball him and we can sign him for a cap friendly deal |

Read isn't exactly flying out there. I don't see Umberger's skating as a major concern. |
