Exactly. You don't pass up a superior player just because we have weak D. Every team should take BPA unless you are the Oilers
- CanuckDon

Only if picking top 3 this year...after that fill your needs.

Apart from McDavid, the Oilers have chosen the wrong "BPA" every year lol

Absolutely, BPA is the best practise, however, it's pretty subjective when debating who's the BPA from #4 on.

Just found a piece that essentially map's out Nylander's short comings:
http://thehockeywriters.c...ander-worthy-of-the-hype/

Some of the major concerns:

"So, if we disregard Nylander’s secondary assists, he finishes his season with just 55 points over 57 games, rather than 75".

"In over ten personal viewings of Nylander during the 2015-16 season, the ability of opposing players to either knock Nylander off of the puck, or pressure him into a bad decisions through the use of an impending check was not only noticeable, but also frequent.

It is the same lack of size which likely inhibits Nylander from whole-heartedly pursuing pucks in the corners and participating in puck battles. When he does, he is rather easily closed off from the puck or even knocked down
"

"Further is Nylander’s choice of positioning and on-ice engagement.

In most cases, Nylander exists as a perimeter player, meaning he likes to stay wide or outside of the play in order to watch it develop. In doing so, Nylander’s line mates typically draw the majority of puck battles in hopes of securing the puck and feeding it to the skilled winger
"

"As a result, Nylander doesn’t generate many offensive opportunities on his own, rather, he feeds off of the speed and skill of his linemates, who typically gain the zone before feeding the puck to Nylander".

Mason Raymond anyone?

- Whiskey-Tango

I'm not very high on Nylander but some of those arguments that the article made are asinine.

Secondary assists are not always or even often less instrumental to the scoring play than the 1st assist the way the article suggests.

I understand the fascination with players that are physically impressive and toolsy but the majority of NHL superstars are supremely skilled above all else and it is hard to deny that either Nylander has that skill.

I think Nylander is a top 10 pick but personally have the 3 defenders above him and possibly Keller as well.

I'll always preach BPA in the first round....if you want a goalie grab one in the 5th round etc.

What do you think the Canucks greatest need is? A top 4 D or a 30 goal scorer? For me we need more than Boeser in the pipeline as far as top line scorers go

it has been a while since I read semi intelligent response on Canucks Army till I read this.

"Take Datsyuk's $7 million contract from Detroit if they give us Anthony Mantha. We would have a 21 year old former 20th overall who's a 6'5", 215# left winger to add to our prospects. We'd also tie up $7 million in cap space to prevent us doing something stupid like signing Lucic."

If the Canucks don't get top three I'd still go with Juolevi or Chychrun, they NEED to build a defensive core. Haven't built one in 45 years.
- LeftCoaster

I wouldn't touch him. He's been on a downward spiral for months. Before the prospects game. He was bad in the prospects game and he's been a ghost in the U18. Anytime I've seen him his skating isn't nearly as good as I expected. Matthews, fins 2&3, tkachuk, dubois, Juolevi or sergachyv at 6

Can you imagine if we got the franchises first # 1 pick and selected a "Yakupov" or "Stefan?"

Canucks have never had a great drafter for a GM, Burke was just ok.
- LeftCoaster

Rating drafting is impossible between mgmt groups as there are so many different factors that come into play. I can understand comparing one team's group against another team in the same time period but not within an organization.

Each draft class varies greatly in talent available, the amount of draft picks and quality of picks, the development of said prospects, pure luck etc.

So far JB is clearly a very dedicated scout and the early results seem good but they always do 1 or 2 years after a draft.

I'd hazard a guess if you ask five GM's you'd definitely get different opinions too.

Could you imagine the Oilers with:

Huberdeau / Landeskog over Nugent Hopkins?
Galchenyuk over Yakupov?
Seguin over Hall?

Hindsight is 20/20 I realize but damn..

It wouldn't surprise me considering the major need we have for point production from. The back end

Disagree, the Canucks GM's throughout their history haven't drafted well, end of storey. They haven't put the right resources in place, people, they haven't developed well and they've mistreated a few top picks in Bure and Umberger.

Bottom line is they've made some horrendous selections when said higher rated player was available. Kopitar being a great example. Bourdon was rated below Anze but Nonis felt they needed D so he picked Luc. Plain and simple it was a bad pick, not because Luc passed, because Kopitar was the BPA.

Chychrun's stock is falling. I would be really scared to pick him at even 10. The last 3 drafts we picked guy that fell. Shroedder washed out, Shink was dealt away and JM is now the next Raymond with all Edler plus trade rumors.

I think it was Joey Kenward on 1040 this morning, said in chatting with Linden and Benning that was his takeaway.

That would be a scary lineup!

Another note, how great has Jost looked at the U18's..14 points in 5 games. I have a feeling it's going to be awfully frustrating watching him destroy the NCAA next year on a line with Boeser knowing he isn't our prospect
