He was quite eccentric but wrote some good music

Eccentric yes, but had a hell of a mind for business. He was able to control his image and music throughout his career. Even the NFL can't re-broadcast his superbowl halftime show because Prince owns the footage. That's amazing when you think about how most musicians become puppets for their labels or the industry in general.

I didn't know that about the NFL show (thanks for sharing) but knew that he was quite meticulous in both his writing and image/marketing. Didn't he also have a feud with one of his record companies over their (mis)management? and finally started putting out music independently? Speaking of which, you're certainly right about musicians being held hostage by either their recording companies or management (I read somewhere that Pink Floyd only received a pittance for Dark Side of the Moon)

My buddy does these videos on instagram singing songs sometimes in his truck just joking around.. He did a Prince song once and it was removed like 15 minutes later with a message from princes legal team saying it was copywright infringement lol

Universal (who owned publishing rights to a Prince song) once sued a mother who uploaded a video to Youtube of her kids dancing to Lets Go Crazy.

Very sad to hear about Prince. I didn't expect that, even after his medical emergency last week.

I saw him in concert at what was then General Motors Place in 1997. It was a tasty show and he was a taskmaster over his band.

A true original. RIP.

Now...back to our regularly-schedule blog. More on Thatcher Demko here:
