I'm looking forward to being able to see some of the top programs come through (and it seems they will be the replacement tenant at the Pacific Coliseum if they get it), but I think their hopes of keeping homegrown talent wont actually pan out. The history of some schools and the allure of the American campus lifestyle will work against them IMO
- WhiteLie

Didn't SFU try to do this with their basketball program awhile ago (I may be misremebering)?

Technically, can keep both. 14 forwards and 7 D. That or they rotate them in and out. They bring different qualities to the table. Strictly 4th line role, i'd use Granlund. More scoring role, Vey. Vey is showing improvement in offensive numbers.
- manvanfan

I replace Vey with Pedan as 14 th forward. For the big teams use him as a forward and also as the 8 th Dman

That's because every other GM in the league knew he had gone through Level 1.

you are absolutely right. I think for a NCAA team to start off at a new school, there will be years and years of heart ache simply based off the fact that the school has zero history.

Prust was effective before his injury. Prust was effective in Montreal. If Kassian wasnt going to produce like a top 6 and rarely played physical.... then Prust could do what Kassian was doing for us on the bottom 6. We were not going to find a young NHL player that could immediately give us grit for Kassian. Instead of waiving they tried to fill a hole instead.
- boonerbuck

Oh I always liked the trade. I never use hindsight to analyze a trade....I live downtown so I know what kind of a POS Kassian was. I was always shocked a team took a chance on him

That "swing" man thing to me just isn't an nhl thing. It did help Burns and Buff with their offensive games but in the end they are both back to playing D. At the press conference, didn't sound like Pedan wanted to play forward either.

I know they've been trying for a while to get the hockey team into Div 1 for the past 10 years or so. Its a really long process though because they had ex-CHL players on their roster and go through the ridiclousness that is the NCAA bureaucracy

I think leave Vey Bloomstrand and Grenier unsigned at first see if an OS comes out of it.

Tons of Canadian kids are going to American Colleges to play hockey. I'm sure a lot would welcome the chance to stay in Canada.

Playing forward at 800k is better than playing D for 60 K in Utica. KHL is an option I guess

It looks like they got into the NCAA Div II league in 2010. They were ineligible for the league tourney in the first 2 years (likely part of their negotiations to getting into the NCAA), and have not qualified for the Div II tourney in the last 3 years. Clearly, it's tough sledding to get any traction.

EDIT: I'm talking about their basketball team. I wonder how it works for athletic scholarships?

If the dollar remains where it is, that will definitely help recruit some Canadians as US schools can be quite expensive for those on partial scholarships. But the lower mainland wont give the same experience as it is playing for UND or Wisconsin or the Boston universities. The American campus' are just so tight, and they love their athletic programs, I cant see SFU getting similar support and players choosing to be a part of that small/college town campus experience

I am on the fence about this one. Reason being is I don't want to put up 12 million per for the next 7 years. Someone is going to pay it and they will be capstrapped for the whole 7 years.
- thundachunk

I don't think one player is worth that either.

It's a hockey forum, to discuss Vancouver related hockey things. It's the offseason, where generally you look back on the year that was. I'm not arguing about these trades and who won or who lost the trade. I think every team makes good and bad trades.

I can change the subject to how Van is going to sign Stamkos. It's going to happen, dude.

- manvanfan

If that happens I'm Phuckering off to Philly
