Interesting sidebar with Umberger is, if he sustains a fairly serious injury, the Flyers won't be able to buy him out.

With the game literally meaning nothing for the Flyers, I lean towards getting Neuvirth a few innings before the playoffs. But it would be a nice gesture to give Emery a start as a farewell gift, since he's unlikely to be in the NHL next year.

re Jsaq's post:

I'd start Neuvirth, he needs to play a bit before the playoffs. However, I would dress Emery as the backup and, regardless of the score (unless Neuvy is working on a shutout), I'd put Razor in to start the 3rd.

I was thinking that, too...Can they dress 3 goalies? Start Neuvy, give the kid the second, and give Razor a farewell gift in the third

I really do hope they at least give Giroux and Streit the night off. G looks pretty beat up and a guy pushing 40 doesn't need to be playing 4 in 5.

I wouldn't even dress Mason or Voracek. Probably Giroux, too. Streit is a good choice to have rest.

I think Mason will be in bed at 7 tonight. How he kept it ogether down the stretch is amazing.

Quick question though. Is there any chance Del Zotto will be ready? I forget what type of injury he sustained . Hypothetically if the Flyers got passed the Caps, would he be able for round 2?

If neuvirth can't play then I would love to see stolarz get the nod. The guys been called up a lot but never given a opportunity to start so why not now.

Here's the thing with Neuvirth. He hasn't had a single practice. He skated on his own with Dillabaugh and took a few warmup-type reps. He was not ready yet to practice when the Flyers had their last one.

They had a morning skate in Detroit -- not sure if he made the trip, since I only do driving distance road games. No morning skate on Thursday before Toronto game. No practice on Friday. No morning skate yesterday. No morning skate today.

Those are very tough conditions by which to try to make a return after a substantial absence. OTOH, it would be good for him to get a game in.

If this game had meant something and Mason was banged up, they would have had to start Neuvirth and hoped for the best. But since it is a meaningless game, not sure the better course is not to wait and let him have practices on Tue and Wed before feeling comfortable about him in a game (if need be) at some point against Washington.

Would be a nice gesture to start Emery. But Lyon is part of the future and the Flyers are already burning the first year of his ELC by carrying him on their NHL roster this past week (that was by contractual agreement, and a prerequisite for getting the deal done).

Stolie is back with the Phantoms and they already returned Ouellette to Reading. Yes, they could tell Stolie to go to DC, but I don't think they will with three goalies already to choose among even with Mason getting the last night off.

Torn ligaments in his wrist. His timetable may allow a return in the Stanley Cup Finals but players have a way of "magically healing" early. So I'd say an ECF could be possible. Second round is a stretch, but remember how early Patrick Kane returned for Chicago last year.

Bill I thought I read Lyon was concentrating on finishing out his semester at school. Is he with the team?

I'd go with neuvirth. Unless there's a risk of reinjury I'd like to see him get some game action

All good points. Depends on how neuvy is feeling. If he hasn't practiced at all and is not ready for a game, then he shouldn't have backed up IMO. So get him a start to get his mojo back as well prob need him. If not, doesn't matter to me who plays, but mase shouldn't even dress. Chilax in the cote suite with g, Jake simmer and any other vet who is banged up.

I already assumed Mason would be a scratch tonight, and yeah, I'd give Jake the night off too.

Razor's has been such an inspiration. However, start Lyons and get the process started to see if this prospect can play in the NHL. Neuvy will get some much needed practice time this week.

Absolutely, if it was up to me, tonight's roster would be:

Schenn-Coots-Gagner
Raffl-Weal-Simmonds
Laughton-Cousins-Read
the usual 4th line.

Medvedev-Schultz
AMac-Ghost
Manning-Gudas

Neuvirth or Lyon
Lyon or Emery

I'd also consider scratching AMac, and bringing up Morin too. I'm keeping Umby on the sideline as well, no need to risk an injury and jeopardize a potential buyout.

I don't care if it is the Zamboni driver who dresses for the Flyers tonight. There is ZERO reason to start Mason.
