This is why I said coming last only sets you up for failure. You expect 1st overall pick, but it's still an 80% chance you don't get it.
Coming in at 27-29, you don't have expectations for the 1st overall, and when we win it, it's going to be the greatest celebration since our back to back Presidents Trophy days. - Scooby_Doo
I don't think many Leafs fans are expecting the #1 pick. Well, certainly not in Mike's thread. Only advantage is not dropping lower than 4. With the kids picking up wins now, we may drop down to 5th or 6th. This is where Hunter earns his paycheque. Honestly, I'd rather have Laine than Matthews, but I have an unhealthy dislike of Americans |

48.5% chance of picking 4th. Trust me, Leafs will pick 4th - walshyleafsfan
We've never had a first overall, so I feel you're pessimism. Something's got to give. or maybe it doesn't and we both lose out and Edmonton gets another #1... why not |

At this point, I'm actually cheering for them to get the 1st pick again. I just want a whole mockery of the league to occur over and over again |

It's been a bleak year when a shade-filled Chris Higgins post-game interview is one of the highlights of the season

gotta love the Higgins quote... sounds great for the room and team send him back to Utica.

Leafs will draft Chychrun or Tkachuk at #4 - walshyleafsfan
I would feel uneasy if my team was drafting at #4 (in any draft, not particular to this year), just seems like the perfect spot for it to all go wrong, like going off the board a little bit. I'm thinking Reinhart in 2012, Pouliot in '05 and a few other Defensemen in between. |

I agree. There always seems to be the top 3 then the rest. Here's hoping for a Backstrom. |

Even 5th overall, the worst player taken since 2000 was Chistov and Whitney (who was still an Olympian), and 6th had a few busts in Brule and Filatov but still produced many solid NHLers at that spot. #4 just seems like it sets the table for the rest of the draft and you either hit or miss. I would like to trust my GM to succeed but it seems tough |

Yeah. Maybe we could trade down and pick up another 2nd round pick. Use that and Pittsburgh's pick to trade up and make sure we get one of the dmen in Bean or Fabbro. (If they don't go top 12 or so) |

There are less top-5 busts since 2000. Talent of kids is getting better, which is why pushing up the draft age seems a little silly to me. |

Yeah I really would think it near impossible these days to draft someone in the top 5 and they not make the NHL at some point, my comment was just in regards to above average players in the top 5. Spot #4 seems to be the place more average players come from in the top 6 picks since 2000. Jones, Backstrom, Pietroangelo, are stars, Johansen is nearly there. After that you see the likes of Evander Kane, Larrsson, Pouliot, Ladd, all solid NHLers but not what you hope for from a top 4 pick |

Winger Anton Rodin's club season finished last week in Sweden. Sources indicate he's close to a deal with Canucks.

Larrsson seems to be coming along to me and Ladd is pretty great combination player, if he was under 30 I would be pro-signing him. But yeah, I see what you mean. I don't think it's reason to trade down though. I think once you've had a 70 pts season at this level, you are there. Johansen seems pretty legit at a young age to me. The last 10 or so #5 picks have looked good too, I trust JB to make the most of the pick. |

Oh no, definitely wouldnt trade down. I just feel like thats a draft position where the expectations from the player are still high but its more risk. If the Canucks pick at 4, it seems likely they take a D, but that could hit/miss or take a few years to show. Forward seems the safer pick, but a) not a need and b) could just be a 2nd/3rd liner. Its a position I wouldn't feel entirely comfortable in is all, even though I trust JB's to do well |

I'm actually coming around on picking a winger in the first round, other than Boeser, we don't have a lot of scoring coming up. Tkachuk has got a pretty good touch around the net it seems. We're not scoring, as long as we pick d in the second (maybe twice ) than I'm all for it. team needs scoring wingers and Defenseman . |

Really? The one on hockeydb is the opposite. Chychrun is the clear favorite among scouts as an all-around defender, best in class skating and hands. Fabbro was slated a defensive d-man, but his stats speak of someone with clear offensive ability (67pts in 47 games). I think it's Chychrun/juolevi or Sergachev where we are now (4th pick). Fabbro seem a consensus mid-rounder. I think were taking Matthews 1st
edit:eliteprospects.com not hockeydb - neem55
think it was tsn that had it but I may be wrong. It was from a list posted here and linked to it.
we have the chance for a good D man sounds like no matter who we pick. Perhaps picking who they feel is the best talent combined with being the most nhl ready would be best since he need to grow these guys NOW.
also from another post ....good point scooby about watching who falls. Gillis didnt realize that in shink. |

We need more scoring from D in a huge way. |
