If you believe the hit was clean you like dirty play - it wasn't even a check.
Educate me. How do you check another player? Simple technical explanation is all that's needed. - Aussiepenguin
It wasn't blatantly dirty but he lead with a knee. If Dumo's knew is hurt then I'll put money on it being a knee to knee hit and yes, that is dirty, and a sneaky as (frank) dirty hit at that. |

there is no proper technique. Just don't hit them in the head or from behind and make sure they have the puck or had it in the last 3 seconds. Players check with shoulders, there arms, the hips and there backs. |

As you know I'm no hockey player/expert/anything, but I played a contact sport for a very long time. You know what to do when to do it if you want to do something - very easily.
I asked Grinder for an explanation on checking, but I'll put it to you this way.
If you approach a swing door that can be easily pushed open, how do you go through the door if you want to push it open without your hands but can use anything else - being forearms elbows shoulders etc but without kicking it & risk damaging the door? |

He always does the same thing, he pins with his legs if a guy is getting out of the way of his hit. Its why he has so many dirty knee on knee hits. He stuck his leg out and pinned Dumolin's skate. Could be an ankle or knee when that happens but didnt look too serious. It wasnt near Ovi's dirtiest hit but it is still not a good body check.
Honestly, at some point someone on the Pens needs to just take a big run at Ovi and give him a taste of his own medicine. |

So if a player comes straight on with an open body, leads with his forearms but lifts 1 of his legs off the ice & makes first contact with his leg/knee/shin on the opponents leg that's a check? |

People are gonna give you the tuck your elbow, lead with your shoulder, dont leave your feet shpeal but anyway you can take your man out without hitting him in the head or in the numbers without leaving your feet to much is gonna work. |

Yeah... but we don't really have a player who does those kind of hits. Kunitz or one of our young guys maybe can do it?
Obviously should have had Orpik bury him years ago while we still had him. |

if the other player falls down/gets hurt/ cant play the puck yep. Ovi hit shoulder to shoulder first anyway so I dont get your point. |

Eh... it was late, he came from pretty far away, slewfooted/kneed him a bit... lots of things you can label that. It was an Ovi hit with intent to injure, not sure why we are debating the definition of a hit. We know what that was, and the only saving grace was Dumo was half turned to the boards, so it wasn't him going headfirst into the boards.
I'd rather a shoulder thing (I believe it was a stinger + getting the poop knocked out of him) than more concussion issues here. |

If someone on the pens took a run at Ovi all that would happen is they would get plastered by the reverse check Ovi would throw. The guys a beast. |

I think it was the final game last year & Kuni just kept hitting him every chance he got, drove him nuts & put him off his game. That's what needs to happen because you unfortunately can't bring a truck on the ice to (frank) him up!! To take Ovi out you need some serious muscle which we don't have! Or bring Sestito up with the objective to break his jaw in a few places with an elbow followed by a knee when he hits the ice then a few hard straight (frank)ing right hooks on his cheekbone then retire. OK, maybe not the right hooks! |

Not sure what you're asking, unless you are going with the "every hit can injure/should hurt some" stance. In which case, you're not retarded, and you know the difference in what is being debated without being spoonfed it. |

If Crosby keeps playing like he is the rest of the season he deserves (though he probably wont) to win the Hart this year. The team has gone through a coaching change, huge roster turnover & injuries yet the Pens are streaking heading into the playoffs. Last night was a prime example, dominating play, putting up points and getting in the mix, trading some shots with Oshie. That was some great hockey!
Nothing against Kane, he is having a great year putting up points but he doesnt contribute in all of the other area's Crosby does. Not to mention, he plays on a team that has won 2 of the last 3 cups with their core kept largely in tact, makes that whole scoring thing a bit easier.

Ok sounds like your looking at a different gif. Ovi's first contact on Dumo was his left leg that was raised off the ice contacting Dumo's leg. He next hit him with his forearms as he was facing front on to the side of Dumo. There was no shoulder as Ovi's forearms hit him as Dumo was going down.
This is why I asked you what a check is.
If you check someone with your leg then yes - he can finish his 'check', with the rest of his body. Not sure I've seen too many checks that were leg on leg first finished with the upper body! That would appear to me to be a penalty. boychuks knee to Geno must be a check in your hockey book is it? Or I'm mistaken? |

This I agree with. It has to be subtle pain in the arse 'checks' that are relentless. So every time he turns around he gets bumped/hit/checked/disturbed. |

The reason you never see Ovi get rocked is because he is extremely opportunistic. He will never put himself in a position to be hit and win a race for a puck like Crosby does. He slows up and lets the D get the puck every time so he can give a hit instead of taking one. No doubt he is a beast, but he is also very selective on when he throws hits.
Because he has a propensity to come high on his hits, I'd love to see Kunitz or one of the young guns throw a big hip check on him in the middle of the ice. Use his dirty play against him and flip him head over heels. |

I didn't see the replay but live I didn't have much of a problem with Ovi hit aside from the result. I'll have to look again today. I did think the crowd rattled him a bit cuz he ran around next shift and I thought he could have been called for 2 late hits. |

My favorite part of last night was later in the third after all the physical/dirty hits began...... Rust had the puck skating up the wing and you can see that talentless goon Tom Wilson taking 4 good strides with his radar locked for a center ice hit. I guess Rust saw him coming and took about 5 hard strides and was at the offensive zone faceoff dot. Wilson just turned and went to the bench.
I'm getting the feeling that the Caps are structured like the team we wanted to be the last few years vs what we are now..... and we know how well that fared for the Pens once we met a speedy team in the playoffs.
At least 1/3 of the Caps starting D was just completely overmatched by our speed (Weber and Orpik) and they don't have a Keith Seabrook Hjalmarson trio to ride to the cup like the Hawks last year. |

I'm surprised that this quote wasn't about how horribly Ovechkin "assaulted" Dumoulin.
Great weekend for you guys, and well-deserved. |

Wouldn't go as far as an assault... but it was a classic late hit cheap shot by Ovi |

How do you go about hitting someone without intent to injure? - Grinder47
In rugby league which is a very physical game, the match review panel have 3 levels of judgement when an 'illegal' contact is made. Is a leg on leg illegal in the NHL?
1. Accidental contact, 2. Careless/reckless contact, 3. Dangerous contact.
Now all 3 may be someone using a knee on someone else but they are the 3 categories for judgement.
So was Ovi's accidental? Did he accidentally raise his leg before contact?
Was it careless or reckless, was there a sudden change of direction or another action to take into consideration that affected the resulting contact?
Or was it dangerous contact? Simple, was the contact by Ovi dangerous? |
