New idea.
Let's sign Ilya Kovalchuk in a bid to increase Russian presence on team.
Bear with me here (see what i did there
He's oldish 32, but i had no idea that he's 6'3 and over 230 lbs!
Get him in to play with Try, Pedan and Sergachev next year.
Sign him to a 2 year bridge deal. Lots of incentives/targets.
he can replace Vrbata on the wing.
Flip him in 2 years to a contender.
huh? Anyone?.....any...one? - dbot
Not a dumb idea . He is a high end scorer. Depends the price he is asking. |

If Vey keeps improving, at the very least they should get something for him and recoup some asset value even at some loss. Maybe it goes the other way and Granlund is packaged or something.
How do they send down McCann if he comes ripping out of the pre season again like last year? This will be interesting for sure. I dont think the AHL will hold him back though. He needs strength and confidence. - boonerbuck
hopefully theres a team out there who could use Vey....but clearly he would NOT fetch a 2nd again. 3rd maybe
McCann is way better, but probably should be our bubble guy for a season. Perhaps with the right winger he'd be a lock earlier |

Not 100% sure but I believe that's what I heard on TSN.
Ilya Kovalchuk and SKA St. Petersburg appear to be in the middle of a feud that might result in the superstar leaving the KHL team.
SKA has made Kovalchuk a healthy scratch for four straight games and taken away his captaincy. It's been speculated that the diminished value of the Russian Ruble along with the KHL's financial issues might have led the SKA to try to push Kovalchuk to break his contract. That's led for some to think that this will all end with Kovalchuk returning to the NHL, but we'll have to wait and see. For his part, Devils GM Ray Shero hasn't heard anything from Kovalchuk's camp. Kovalchuk got out of his old contract with New Jersey by retiring and the Devils would get preferential rights if Kovalchuk wanted to return to the NHL, per NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. This year Larsen was named defenceman of the week twice in the KHL and was selected to the All Star game. Finished 5th in D-man scoring. - A_SteamingLombardi

He retired so NJ doesnt have his rights anymore I think. All 30 GMs need to approve him returning to the league, then I think he would be a Free Agent. |

Vey would be good for us if we had a finisher. He creates some nice scoring opportunities |

"If Kovalchuk does choose to return to the NHL in 2016, the move will need to be approved by all 30 NHL teams because Kovalchuk signed his voluntary retirement papers.
Otherwise he’d have to wait until the 2018-19 season to return to the NHL as an unrestricted free agent at age 35. It’s too early to say whether or not there would be a team or teams opposed to Kovalchuk returning, however, according to a 2013 report from Larry Brooks of the New York Post, if Kovalchuk sits out a full calendar year he can return to the NHL as a UFA prior to 2018-19 as long as he gets consent from the Devils."

oh okay, so NJ has his rights until 2018-19 AND he can only come back with all 30 GMs approving? I could see NJ trading his rights then, dont think they were too impressed
(edit) seems like the only rights NJ has is a veto of him entering the league as a FA. what a mess. |

interesting idea there. I was wondering who we'd replace vrbatta with as RW.
It d have to be big $ as thats his deal apparently, all 30 teams would have to sign off on his return and NJ may actually own his rights if he comes back. Otherwise an interesting selection. Perhaps if teams are leery of signing him it'll make the price more palatable |

Kovalchuk would scare me as a GM, suspended from his KHL team, left NJ in a bad spot. I think his skill is undeniable, but this guy has either an attitude, or horrendous luck with coaches/management. |
