Can a team take Kessel in the expansion draft?
- sammy87

They can. But they won't

Its not really negative, if teams are allowed to include players with NTC/NMC in the expansion then they could leave Kessel unprotected, but why would they he still has trade value.

Yeah leaving Kessel unprotected is a farce. We might have gotten him for a discount, but we still gave up assets for him. Letting him go for free would be a waste. Now if we were to still have Kunitz by the expansion, that would be the kind of contract you expose.

25% of your cap needs to be exposed to the draft- so by today's cap, approximately 18M.. With the Pens having such a top heavy team a big salary will need to be exposed to hit that number. Kunitz, Dupuis and Daley are off the books by then, Hagelin plus a bunch of guys making under a million won't have us hit that plateau... If Fleury isn't exposed, Kessel will be, because we certainly aren't exposing Malkin, Crosby, Letang or Maata to the draft.

Where did you find this 25% number? What happens to teams like us that have expiring contracts, those three you mentioned at 12M in cap are we expected to hastily fill that cap before the expansion? That doesnt add up.

The league is "floating" some different ideas out to determine what is the most agreeable way. Saying that, GMs will move assets before giving away a player with significant value. If the one proposal of protection of 1 goalie is the rule, I fully expect the Pens to deal Fluery prior to the expansion draft.

With the protection rules as limited a lot of teams will be making trades. There is no way we can expose Murray or Pouliot or Fleury to the expansion draft. Meanwhile we have a lack of forwards worth protecting. Pouliot for Drouin type trades would have to happen. Worst case we trade Pouliot for picks to any team without 3d worth protecting.

Daley is a perfectly fine guy to lose to expansion team. You can spend 3.5 and get an adequate replacement. Its the ELC guys and properly paid vets you don't want to lose.

Why is it that overtime Pittsburgh plays Chicago it is playing good hockey ... the Blackhawks that is. Tonight, Philly entered the game with Chicago playing great hockey with the Blackhawks playing poopty hockey. Chicago loses. Go figure.

Im not quite sure what you're saying here, Chicago has been playing like crap lately just came off a 5-0 loss to LA and no team is hotter than Philly right now.
I watched that game, I thought the Hawks were the better team but the puck is bouncing orange and black right now. Philly looked good once they got that lead though, they really locked the game down for awhile until the last 3 mins or so. We really don't want to be giving up an early lead to Philly on Saturday, can't be coming out lethargic like the last few stupid morning games.

They are playing good hockey. I'm not sure I want to qualify them as a good hockey team just yet.

Our even strength scoring and shooting % is much more sustainable than Florida's was/is. But yes, the real test will be the series of games vs PIT. Looking forward to it.

I think both Pittsburgh and Philly are better than Detroit. Detroit will be the odd man out IMO.

AH! I see what you're saying. I also think beating us is more important than beating the Flyers to the Hawks, the whole Crosby/Toews thing.

Think they have a negative goal differential but I think that can be attributed to early season struggles. They look great recently and I wouldn't bet against them. I think it's more likely Pittsburgh or Detroit miss. My concern for the pens is not having Malkin. I know the 1st to games went well but it will get tougher to carry that energy

That's what I said last weekend. Last time Geno was out we went well for 4/5 games then the teams energy seemed to decline & other teams worked out the changes (by the looks of things). We are 2/2 so far & touch wood it keeps going for a few more. If we start missing points it's going to get to a point where other teams games will decide our fate. Hope you all have nails left because there's going to be some nail biters & ass burners coming!!

We have a few more healthy troops this time around (touch wood it stays that way ), so maybe Sid can get some help & the team has become stronger due to playing without Geno before!

It's certainly going to be a ride!!

It's hard not to root for this team. Makes Disco look really dumb for not trusting the youth like we've all been calling for for a while now. Granted, these kids weren't where they are now development wise under his watch
