I think he is smarter than Tanev and Edler I am sure if he was asked what he would bring to a deserted island it would be 10 naked ladies and not Grandmas sandwiches.
I don't expect him to be a number one Dman. He is not overly big ,overly strong , no bullet shot. He is a 23 year old fifth round pick that is out performin all the other D.
He doesn't need to improve , the others do. - VANTEL
Come on now, doesn't need to improve? He's not exactly killing it on the defensive side of things. I get being excited about our best young d-man, but lets not take it there. He's only outperforming in terms of offense, his position is defense.

He is doing so bad they punished him by giving top line minutes ?

No, but as you correctly pointed out others need to improve. He is the best of a bad bunch right now. I think he needs to improve in a few areas and be more consistent overall, otherwise he will be a frustrating player to watch. Guys that have his level of skill and talent are expected to get to a certain level of reliability; I expect him to pan out into a solid top 4 and PP specialist, though he could surprise for better or for worse it is still early

he's being rewarded, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have room for improvement. Is it a reward when Tanev/Edler are out? Certainly looked like a player that was out of his depth last night IMO

I don't know how to say this any clearer. He is a young kid, practically making league minimum who should be on a third pairing if things were done normally. It is his first year and should not be matched against other teams best players. That is why you pay players like Edler Tanev Hamhuis and Sbisa the big money they are being paid. It is not Huttons fault if the coach and GM don't think they are capable of doing what the first year player is doing. We had the same problem last year and the bottom pairs got blamed again.
It is time to point the fingers where they rightfully should be pointed.

In case you didn't notice the whole team sucked last night. Not only Hutton. Thus the bag skate today.
You can't judge a rookie by one game. He played great against Nashville and the game before.

I agree with what youre saying, I just thought you had made a comment saying he doesnt need to improve and that hes already capable of top pairing. I would disagree with that portion, he is easily top 4 on this team next year (barring some crazy slump) but he can improve a lot and I hope he does. Even if he just remains as is and becomes more consistent, that would do wonders on a nightly basis

this is where I'm at with him too, hope he pans out and I guess am just slightly pessimistic but really hope he proves me wrong

My judgement isn't based on last night, I'm simply saying he didn't look good last night which is pretty fair and I think accurate that he played like poop considering the amount pf shots/goals/zone possesion while he was on the ice 5/5

I did say he didn't need to improve. He is doing fine and will improve with natural progression. It will all come with experience.
I never said he should be top pairing . I said he is not that big, tough , nor does he have a bullet shot. No one should expect this 5 round draft pick to be a number 1 D .

First year kid , league minimum scape goat top minutes
We're either going to get a top 3 pick or a good defensive prospect. Not a bad problem to have. - we_are_all_canucks
Love it. We need scoring touch and D, so I think wherever we end up were going to get one or the other with that pick and maybe the second rounder too if JB works his magic. I think having the same problem next year might be a good idea too, but I understand why others might not think so.
He played 4th in minutes. He's not being thrust into top-2, 3-4 and is over his head. He did play well against Nashville, but that was one game in how many since Edler has gone out has he played that well? It's not just him, I'm not saying he's a Weber or something and we need to can him. I just think implying that he doesn't need to improve and that he will succeed in top-4 next year, when he is not this year is not right. Offensively he's been really good, I like him on the pp for sure he is creative. Defensively I'm not quite as optimistic, I hope you're right and he does really well top-4 next year but that's just not what I see based on his season.
BHutts mobility n ability to skate the puck out separates him from the pack.
I luv his poise n he can only get better. As for scoring I see him as a PP QB settng up a point shot or moving up on the rush. He also could work on going to the weak side for 1 timers.
Being a converted F his speed is a nice asset n he can rush the puck pretty well.
His upside is looking good but i wish he had a cannon.
