It's looking like JB will draft either Chyrchun or Sergachev, depending on where they fall, unless they land in the top 3. I dont think many people can complain about that. - Crazybagoham

you could argue though, with hindsight most teams would regret not picking up a lot of these guys earlier on(Karlsson comes to mind, I think he went like #15? Doughty is a top 3 I think). This goes to show you that defensemen are incredibly underrated in these drafts. So better to use our top 10 pick for the best d man we can get. - Crazybagoham
I think you are missing the point, that it is much harder to predict D than forwards. Many teams must of thought they were picking the best D when they passed on Karlsson. D still get picked in the top 10, but more often than not the best D end up being selected later. This isn't as true with forwards. |

Come on now, the vast majority of those guys are still picked in the first round, often right outside of the top ten. Seems logical that "reaching" for d that are considered outside of the top 10 might be ok if anything. If they are first round picks, obviously they were predicted to be potentially good. |

Lets call it top 2 defencemen, not many are top 5 or 10 picks.
I think if you narrowed it down to top undisputed defencemen there would again only be ten or so of them total. You could probably make a list and many would/could be top 10/5 picks.
Ima try off of the top of my head to list the top 10 since 2005(because that is the time frame referenced) without looking up stats. These are the elite of the time, can anyone tell me where they are drafted?
Doughty
Keith
Chara
Weber
Pronger
Niedermier
Lidstrom
Karlson
Sutter
Pietrangelo
Edler - Pres.cup
Doughty was 2OA after Stamkos
Weber/keith were 2nds
Chara was 3rd
Nieds, Lidstrom and Pronger were all drafted before 2005
Karlson was mid first
which Sutter?
no idea on Pietrangelo
Edler was a late 3rd
That's not why I chose to reply to this one from the jerkle of speculation about elite defenders. Erik Johnson was 1OA and has had a good career, certainly not elite, but highly servicable, and seems to have gotten much better in the past couple years. When taking a dman in the top 10, you're probably going to get a future NHL player - whether he's elite or not depends depends on what happens AFTER the draft. Everyone who gets picked is highly skilled, there are no busts on draft day. Scouting and Player Development have come a long way in the last ten years. It's why Edmonton continues to suck despite all the top picks. Regardless of which Dman they pick, I pray he's not on the roster next year.
Besides, in the unlikely scenario JB misses with his pick this year, we've got a few more top picks coming before 2020. |

I still don't think we have any high end scorers in the system outside of Boeser. Hodgson was and we know how that turned out.
Maybe I'm reading that wrong but are you saying Ohlund amounted to little? I agree not a elite D but still very damn good.
My point more is that D are so much harder to predict, taking one in the first 10 isn't worth it when forwards are easier to project. - belcherbd
Maybe so but we lack true top 2 D n gotta draft them somehow.
Snipers r always good to find eg Boesser.
Top 2 2-way C's r a must n we look ok for now.
A long time yet for JB to keep on his redesigning while auditioning more prospects followed by the offseason n draft. |

Heck... I will take Hal Gill type at this point. A lot of "experts" are saying this kid is for real.. so for now... I will go with the hype. But its going to take at least a season to determine whether or not he is going to be able to adapt to NA style or not. |

My thinking is he pushes for upgrades n a long playoff run.
Division is weak n time to strike n make their mark.
20OA is not a guaranteed win but we can use it for BPA if a player slides. |

Tampa and Boston aren't exactly weak. I don't think Tallon needs to panic, they have a pretty young team over there. |

I sort of agree
Top 3 picks Mathews Laine Puljujarvi.
4-12 Chychrun Sergachev Juolevi.
12 - 20 Brown or Neimelainen
20 -30 BPA
Second round pick Dman |

if we win the lottery and if Arizona falls to 5.... do we take Matthews and never look back.... or is there the possibility of doing a deal with Arizona. Send Matthews and McCann for D. Strome and the 5th and take Chychrun? |

I have no interest in either.
We have Pedan and Tryamkn as stay at home clear the front on the net D and toughness.
Hutton is the puck mover.
We need a big shot from the point and that is why I favour Sergachev.
We have Edler and Tanev as the minute munchers.
Larsen also sounds like an offensive guy. |

I would draft Mathews and make a trade for OEL
I would look at a trade something like Duclair and OEL for the first, Tanev and McCann |
