Yup…I like that Benning is a builder, my opinion, he knows kids and he's assembling a good young core of players.
His decisions to TRY and make the team competitive last year and this year could have come from his belief in the Sedins still being world-class player or it could've come from the Aquilini family…who knows. - LeftCoaster

Right when you bought your tickets the team was terrible, your memory needs a larger widow to look thru if all your can remember is good times. Those early 90's teams were fantastic until they dismantled it, finishing fourth last in 1998 and third last in 1999.
There's a good base of kids coming up and it appears they're only going to add to that over the next couple of seasons. - LeftCoaster
I remember the bad. Was a fan before that but hard to get to games when you live in Nova Scotia. That's why I wrote "eye witness" in my previous post.
Arrived in 97 and got myself sorted and bought season tickets as soon as I could. It was lucky I got in on the down swing. That was not intended. At that time just a diehard fan who wanted to see the canucks live.
But that has nothing to do with questioning moves of the current regime. When you make an investment whether time, energy, or money you would like to see your investment well managed. I kept investing over a few bumps but it wasn't until this latest version that I decided to pull my money out.
My time and energy is still devoted to the crest but I'm not confident enough in the current group to support them financially. |

Fully understand, good post.
I guess I'm just of the mindset that Jim Benning is gonna make fools out of a lot of people who've questioned his knowledge when it comes to putting some youth together.
If the Canucks sign Demko this off-season 2014 could be their greatest draft ever, big if I know, but if those kids all go onto good things at the NHL level, that's four excellent picks in one draft.
The last time we've seem this many kids under the age of 25 was when you got in. No one knew what Bertuzzi or Naslund or Morrison or the Sedins were going to be at that time.
Baertschi, Horvat, McCann, Virtanen, Hutton, Demko, Boeser, Tryamkin, Pedan, Etem…..all those kids except Hutton & Horvat have been acquired by Benning in the past two years.
To me that's incredible considering where the team was with youth under Mike Gillis! |

So just looking at the D options for next year.
Tanev - Edler
Hutton - Tryamkin
Sbisa - Pedan
Biega.
Does anyone think we deep into the UFA Right-Handed Defensemen pool?
The selection isn't exactly the most appealing.

You didn't list Philip Larsen, he's playing next year guaranteed. Or they'll sign him this summer and give him a long look for sure. |

Wasn't Horvat a Gillis pick? still an amazing amount or talent for 2 drafts and 3 minor trades. |

How is Larsen guaranteed? All we have is his negotiating rights at this point? |

He is, the only reason he's playing in KHL is to get away from Edm, he wants nothing to do with them.
Edit: plus when was the last time the Canucks had a player named Philip? |

totally understand that, but I don't see the point in penciling a player in who we haven't signed yet. |

Pedan, Tree or larsson then. I'll take young a guy who is defensive with lots of xp over unproven everyday all-day. Don't get me wrong, I hope they all turn out great but I tend towards realism a little more and McBain has got the chops/xp on a great defensive team. He's a good 5-6 option for cheap IMO. Demers is capable of playing top-4, will get a raise to 4 million+ though, none of those three guys are. I'm all for them coming to training camp and proving me wrong. I'd be ok with Polak at around 3x3 too. |
