I get what you're saying, really I do. But, what you have to understand is that to the rest of the league Edmonton looks like a team that has done virtually nothing to address the defensive side of things while at the same time amassing one of the greatest offenses the league has ever seen. Yak should have been moved by now for a defenseman. Eberle should have probably been moved last summer for one too. With Mcdavid and Leon down the middle, RNH should be expendable this summer for a quality defensemen.

Edmonton has tried to sign low quality guys like you've stated in hopes that will work, it hasn't. What needs to be done is the movement of some of your offense to boosted up the back end. It should have happened a few years ago, but hasn't. That is why Edmonton really looks like a tanking on purpose hockey club.

- sskkoo1

I don't care what it looks like to the rest of the league.
I'm telling you exactly what it is. That's kind of the point of the discussion. These narratives that get created don't hold much water cause they don't bother to use critical thinking. But instead just ; "they should be good " or "they have first overalls"

You're assuming people are banging down our doors for our players. This is guesswork.
And What value does yaks have? (Incidentally on a side note, yaks also is a commentary on that 'first overall" narrative. Who cares what spot he was drafted in? He's bordering on bust territory. If first is so important, interested in dealing us reinhart or eichel for him?)

In terms of a deal for a defender right now, let's look at what we know.
Who are the sellers ? Buf, tor, cal, cbj, wpg ?
Who of those is going to trade us the top flight defender ? U willing to trade ristolainen? Cause we'll give you nuge today for him.
Cbj gonna trade jones after trading for him? (Who by all accounts we did try to acquire as you've suggested we should do)
Flames gonna trade Brodie?

The only possibility is maybe trouba and the jets. And we don't know if he's actually available.
And the buyers are in a playoff race. They ain't selling.
So we wait till the offseason. But once the deadline passes, without using any critical thinking, people will most assuredly say "why didn't the oilers get a defender !!?"
You can bet on it.

As far as trading eberle before, maybe, but we'd be completely gutting our right side with that move. Kind of robbing peter to pay Paul by doing that. Maybe I guess, but it's certainly not as black and white as you suggest

Also, this strange idea that oiler gm's are the only people that aren't aware of what the oilers need while everyone else is....
Do we think chiarelli and mact don't know?
And we assume there's all these great deals out there that they must've turned down.
If I'm an opposing gm, I lowball the fuk outta them cause their desperate and I know it

You said Bogosian had negative value yesterday. I must have missed the part where you said to get Eberle for him.

So which one is it? Is he negative value or can he get a guy like Eberle?

I'm confused.

I just used Eberle as an example, but I feel my point holds. Yak should have been moved long ago for a defensemen. Yes, his value is down since being drafted but teams will still take a shot on him, and he could have brought back (and still could) a top 4 defensemen right now.

With getting McDavid and especially after the way he's played so far proving he's legit. And Leon proving he can be a solid #2C, RNH should be shopped for a legit #1 defensemen.

What's wrong with moving Pouliot or Purcell for help on defense?

Trading one or two pieces of their amazing offense will not hurt the Oilers, but it will at least show they're trying to improve the defense. They have done nothing so far but sign sub par players, and enough time has passed to make a serious move.

- sskkoo1

Offer us a top 4 dman for yaks and we'll do it

You can say "my point holds", but it really doesn't

no disrespect intended, but I really don't know how else to say that I believe you're seriously misinformed about the oilers organization, and what could've /should've been done thus far

Nobody outside of Buffalo cared what Buffalo did last year or any year. Don't kid yourselves. Edmonton garnered a bit of attention. We can all agree that they have earned the negativity and I for one hope they get the first pick for the next 30 years for their ineptitude (except this year of course ) Call it what you want, tank, retool, rebuild. If it's done properly and with a realistic attainable goal then there should be no issue. The league is better when the Leafs are competitive and they haven't been for quite some time. So much so that this years version has stirred up more excitement than any other in recent memory.

Don't let the media here get the better of you. As most good moms would say. "You're giving them exactly what they want". If you think that this was worth an entire article trolling an entire fanbase, based on the verbal diarrhea of a couple bottom of the sports barrel pundits....... Well then you just got suckered too.

Buffalo did what it had to do and did it well. Same is true for the buds.

I for one am looking forward to getting back to the "your team sucks" banter when we are competitive again. Until then...... Watch the Panthers or something because there is nothing to see here unless your a fan. Otherwise "jog on".

- sbroads24

This !!

We're about to trade purcell in the next week. For a middling pick at best

If we were able to get a quality defender for him we would've!
The guy was traded to us for Sam gagner. So how is he worth a quality top 4 guy now?

Look, we've had this discussion before, so I really don't want to get back into it. My point was how Edmonton looks to other teams fans. I don't care what's available right now, Edmonton has had years to address the issues on defense, and NOT A SINGLE significant trade has been done. That is why you look like perennial tankers. You got Mcdavid last year and yet no moves were made during the off season. I'm sure you could have called about Zadorov and at least made an offer. Other teams are willing to listen, yet nobody ever hears of rumors of Edmonton making offers. Plenty of time has passed, so to say the market is there for them doesn't hold water.

I suggested Bogosian (1.1 salary retained) Foligno and Larsson for Eberle.

I agree that we're all doing the same thing, but there was a ton of pearl clutching in the hockey media, with no shortage in Toronto specifically. Hypocrisy is worth calling out.

They did pitch for both jones and Hamilton . In terms of the rumour game, this is as close to fact as I'll assume. Pretty heavily reported.
In fact by all accounts they offered what was tantamount to a better package than Calgary (higher positioning of picks !)

No idea about the rest, they may have for sure

If I had to guess, the only one there they wouldn't see value in at the time was leddy.

It's been said that Eberle is pretty much untouchable now bc of the chemistry he & mcdavid have

Seems like someone would really have to overpay to get him

Anaheim, Minnesota and St Louis are the only teams i can think of.

St Louis and Minny are cap strapped.

Exactly.

Vatanen, brodin and shattenkirk are all potentially available

If we know this, I'm sure chiarelli does too

Anaheim and St.loo are buyers so we'd prob have to wait till the offseason.
Minny too, but since brodin is hurt / just maybe we can get him now.
Problem is, the asset they'd most likely want is a center and nuge is also hurt

At one point,
Yakupov prob could've gotten any of those guys
Looks like they waited too long
Maybe with a change of scenery Yak can get back on track, but at this point I can't imagine he has much trade value

I really liked him coming out of Juniors too
Tough to figure out why he's having so much trouble, especially since he had pretty good success early on

I'd take a shot for the right price

Just a dumb question here... Can anyone even remember when the Sabres played a game of significant importance? How about a really important goal? Anyone?.... 2006 maybe? Playoffs? What the hell is that? So exactly how long do we wait for this team to even resemble an actual hockey team? 5 points from last place.... Totally unacceptable........

Edmonton is in a weird spot.

The guys they are going to trade at the deadline are not worth top 4 d-men.

The core may not get what people are wanting.
