Sure, but does not mean team success either. More often than not it doesnt. - SMBDragon
you need leaders. More often than not those leader come from those top end picks. |

Dont believe there was a cap at that point. Wasnt it like 04 it came in? Someone know?
True they did have a lot of UFAs. Point was though you dont need a #1 overall to succeed. Glad you agree - SMBDragon
Stevie Y 4th OA
they had several other top 10 draft picks in the late 80's/early 90's most of which were traded and turned into other pieces that helped set them up for years to come.
EDIT: They also had as 1oa and a 3oa as well late 80's early 90's |

Huh. Virtanen opens the scoring off a feed from McCann.
Cracknell's still in, but Dorsett is scratched.

whoa whoa....thats not a correct statement. Many many leaders have been from late rounds. And I can think of many high picks that were terrible leaders.
Kassian not a good leader, hodgson either, kesler....and thats just from our team.
The Crosbys and sakics are very few and far between...sakic was selected 15th btw.
Lidstrom was a 3rd rd...great leader |

Alright let's look at the current leaders of all the NHL teams right now and see if we can see any commonalities
Stamkos 1st
Corsby 1st
Toews 1st
Brown 1st
Weber 2nd
Koivu 1st
Sedin 1st
Tavares 1st
Mcdonagh 1st
Chara 2nd
Giroux 1st
soon to be O'rielly 1st
Mitchell 5th
San Jose (Thorton or pavelski) 1st rounder's
Now that's half the captains in the league. Come on now. |

Im not going to go look and see....Im sure we can both agree the team success wasnt built on high picks. They just drafted smart. Yes they had serious UFAs in a capless NHL too...quite true.
Overall though the point is not about the wings so much, just that high picks are not necessary for success unless you draft like a retard ...like I said theres a team just east of BC that gets #1OA every damn year and they suck to high heaven. |
