You would have about $26 million tied up on your top 6. That's not ideal, but certainly not terrible. - Pete V
I'm not by nature a negative person, but Staal's game has me really really concerned. The drop in play this year from last has been dramatic. Not that there is much the Rangers could do about it, but if his play deteriorates further, I would want some assurances someone could step in. Losing Skjei really only gives the Rangers 1 other option. Graves.
Yandle is great to have when he's able to play in a top 4 role. But when McDonagh returns, he will likely shift back to his previous role and I'm not sure his 6.5M+ cap hit in that role is beneficial with Skjei in the pipeline. We can move a forward like Kreider to make room as you said, but do we really need that many defensemen making 4.7M+? It still doesn't make sense to me. - rangerdanger94
I think it will hurt more to lose Yandle and Boyle in the same year than people think. The Rangers play a transition game, and when you lose two of your best puck movers on the backline, I think that will hurt (despite their other deficiencies).

Sure, but you can also look at it as signing Yandle gives you protection. Of course, eventually you would have to figure out what to do with Staal's salary.
You re-sign Yandle your top 2 left side defensemen are McDonagh and Yandle for years, assuming you are correct that Staal drops-off.
Blog up later, jammed at work. Lousy first, better second and string third last night. The G and Staal pairing were lousy in advanced metrics but did a decent job of limiting Crosby's good looks. A few scary moments, especially if Kessel or Kunitz could have converted 87's feeds, but a pretty good effort overall.
Interesting idea in dealing Skjei and Kreider for Drouin, though that depends on what is done with Yandle. Dreger noted nothing will be done with McD out, would love to expand that and say, regardless of McD nothing will or should happen. I think Stevie Y is holding out for that blockbuster deal and do you want to take the chance Ck20 puts it all together in Tampa?

The Rangers defensive depth on the left side is actually pretty good. Given the 3 they have on the roster now, add in Skjei. He's the bigger name, but don't count out Ryan Graves. At worst I think of Ryan Graves as Eric Gelinas.

I know what Kreider is at this point. I've seen him for years. He can be effective. I think he can score 25 goals, if he ever gets his head out of his ass, but I just don't see a Superstar. The question in my view is not whether I am willing to take the chance that Kreider can put it together in Tampa, but whether I am willing to take the chance that Drouin will be better for the Rangers than Kreider would be for the Rangers.
Players going both directions. Kreider can put it together in Tampa, and it could still be a good deal for the Rangers. Or it may not be. Uncertainty is part of every trade.
And Drouin is locked in next year at 900K. How much is Kreider going to get?

I wonder if Millers recent play will make Gorton think more about dealing Kreider now?
I think Miller is playing how everyone thought Kreider should be. So in and odd way Miller could be Kreiders ticket out of here.

When a player is due a bump in pay, they aren't playing well, and the team has cap concerns and other contracts tied up in no trade clauses, then that player is at risk of being traded. And I think he's an asset that has value. So, the question is when you are deciding between signing certain players is what asset do I value more, the enigmatic puck moving defensemen or the middle class, enigmatic young (but aging) forward.

I don't think GMs look at it like that. At the end of the day, having both guys results in having depth. Plus Miller can burn out at any moment and we've seen what Kreider can do in the playoffs.
I mean really, what type of player could Kreider get us back in return right now? Another underachieving forward who needs a change of scenery at best, or maybe a guy like Drouin if we add SIGNIFCANT pieces to go along with him.
