yes, no doubt... but if he knows they are looking to move him and offer to send him to a contender, maybe he relents. they could tell him on the down low that if he helps them at the deadline they'd sweeten an offer to him in the off season from 3yrs@4m to [email protected] then he might do it... what i'm saying is they should be smart and get something for hammer at the deadline by talking to him... - kaptaan
As a fan I am pissed if he doesn't waive. As a man with a family I fully understand if he doesnt |

Phaneuf won't look nearly as bad playing with Karlsson. |

Ottawa got FLEECED - Codes1087
how is that?
Between Dion and all of Ottawa's scraps the cap hits are relatively similar.
Ottawa basically got the only NHL player in the deal. (Michalek on I.R and breaking down).
Say what you will about Phaneuf, but in actuality he is a top 4 guy and should look quite good along side Karlsson |
|
|
|
Soooo, Dion for a Second rounder?
 - Whiskey-Tango
All I remember reading from leafs fans was how Phaneuf would return a
1st & later round pick
Blue-chip prospect
B-grade prospect. |

Ottawa's top pairing will eat up nearly half the game. |

All I remember was there was no chance to trade him without retaining salary and he was a 5/6 at best. Bad penalties, cancer in the room, bad defensively. Leafs did quite well to get out of his contract. They're gonna have to pick someone up in the offseason though it looks like |

No they didn't, the Leafs took on 9 million in salary that runs thru next year. Short term, this year and next, they saved zero money on the cap. According to generalfanager they now have zero cap space. |

Exactly. Although I think he's gone missing again.
As long as he's back for the Olympics. |

he is paid 7 mill until 2021... Essentially the trade breaks down to Dion and his salary for a 2nd. Cowen and Greening will MOST likely be bought out in the summer. This clears cap space for some big names for TOR. Anytime you can shed big salary AND get something in return is a big win. IF you look at it your way, Phaneuf as a second pairing defenseman @ 7 mill looks even worse. |

I think it's great for Ottawa (for the next couple years anyway). They actually got rid of about $10M worth of dead weight salary for this year and next year (Greening is $2.65M this year and next, playing in the minors; Cowen is $3.1M this year and next, and might actually be the worst defenceman in the NHL... even worse than Sbisa; Michalek gets $4.0M this year and next, and is injured most of the time).
Phaneuf will play second pairing in Ottawa and will do quite well, IMO |

They're not done moving players, buying one of the Ottawa guys out, or denoting players.
They will have space this summer. |

This.
Phaneuf as a second pairing will help a ton. Good trade for Ottawa.

I'm sure there's more pieces to fall but this deal, as it sits, doesn't give Toronto any cap flexibility. Contrary to what people think it looks like on the surface.
Also, buyouts still count against the cap. |

I do enjoy that Phaneuf makes more money than Karlsson. That Karlsson contract is a (frank)ing steal for the Sens |

7 mill as a second pairing d-man until 2021... I sure as hell hope he is a good 2nd pairing for that money.. |

Absolutely. I don't think they are too worried about cap flexibility at the moment. Clearing Clarkson, Kessel and Dion has meant that the current management team can dictate the salary scale and who earns what. Anyone that says moving Dion without retaining any salary is a bad deal is either lying or two faced |

If you look at the Sens cap structure as a whole, rather than just the individual contract, you can see that they can easily afford to pay him $7M even though he's playing 2nd pairing. This trade makes them better now and over the next few years, and it took a 2nd rounder and a mediocre prospect to do it. |

at the expense of a huge cap hit though. Does the good outweigh the bad? I am not so sure. Greening and Cowen were dead weight but what is stopping ownership of buying them out this summer? I don't think either gets traded again as their salaries are crap. I think Dion isn't as bad as what people and media say, but I don't think he is anywhere close to 7 million in salary. |
