I think the trend of salaries will change the perspective on it by the end. As salaries go up, the typical cap hits for top end D will be in the 8-9 (maybe 10-12 by 2021) range and 3-4 guys will easily be in the 6-7 range. If he can hold his own in a top 4 role, the salary wont be much of an impact IMO |

I'm not sure which team improved their chances at a first overall pick the most with this deal....Toronto drops their number one d man. And ....now Ottawa has to play him the rest of the season. They could finish 29/30 with the slimmest of margins. |

Agreed.
I guess some people see it as a win for the Sens and others for TOR. I personally think its a win for the Leafs. Short term salary on a team that has fully embraced a rebuild/tank and has cleared cap space for the future (stamkos?). Sens immediately shed some salary and make their top 4 a bit stronger. I don't really think this years salary matters that much to TOR as they and everyone know they aren't making the playoffs. IF they intend to buyout Cowen and Greening this summer, then that is HUGE cap savings for a 2nd round pick essentially. |

at the expense of a huge cap hit though. Does the good outweigh the bad? I am not so sure. Greening and Cowen were dead weight but what is stopping ownership of buying them out this summer? I don't think either gets traded again as their salaries are crap. I think Dion isn't as bad as what people and media say, but I don't think he is anywhere close to 7 million in salary. - Codes1087
They have one of the cheapest owners. This reminds me a lot of the Clarkson-Horton deal. Toronto can eat salary and take cap hits and the smaller market teams want something functional for the money so they take the Clarkson and Phaneuf deals to get a reasonable player for money they would have to spend on nothing anyway |

That may be the trend moving forward but is not currently the trend now. Look at the company that Dion is in with regards to the Dmen with cap hits at 7mill range per year. He is in elite company. Perhaps we cut him some slack and say some of his stats are due to being on a bad team, he is still no where close to being a 7 million dollar dman. |

I will agree to this. OTT ownership is one of the dumbest in the league. |

Who the hell are the canucks going to sign in the offseason with all their cap space? Buff is gone.... Stamkos will either resign or sign with the leafs.
Lucic, Ladd, Yandle, Boedker, Brouwer, E. Staal, Goligoski, Backes, Eriksson?

Save that cap space for when Jamie Benn and Johansen become UfAs |

No he isnt, but as we agreed OTT has dumb owners and I am sure their view is they would rather over pay for a guy who can solidify the top 4 (and potentially perform better not being the #1 guy in more favorable matchups) than to continue paying that money to guys who are barely on the ice |

Unless youre getting good term and cap hit, I would pass on these guys and see if you can steal a top UFA (though I cant see Benn leaving Dallas) |

I just see TOR as a team that has full embraced a rebuild/tank. Clearing 10 mill in the summer of 2017 is huge. So they are terrible for 1 more year after this one, it is not as though the fans should be used to anything different. |

I seen Davy Keon in the AC a few days ago, maybe the Leafs might get him to steer the ship for the rest of the season. He just might be their best player. |

Probably would be actually. One more year of this poop and then I think we should just be about ready to head in the right direction. |

So many layers to deal. Cap hits worked, but #Leafs traded $33M in future contract commitments in exchange for $11.7M in commitments. Huge. |

Very true, it is their strength to be financially stable and a fanbase that is buying into the rebuild hype. I really think these moves wont help them get Stamkos though, if he really wants to win as some say these moves are signalling a few more years before the team even gets competitive. If he ends up being a Leaf, it'll be because he's always wanted to and is fine with losing and counting his millions |

Ya, i don't know about that, here's their current defense, keep in mind they don't have much depth and/or blue-chip D prospects.
Rielly-Hunwick
Gardiner-Cowen
Corrado-Percy
And we thought we had a long road ahead of us in regards to rebuilding our D
Even if Nylander, Marner and their 1st this year turn into 80-90pt players their D and lack of any solid goal tending will ensure they remain in the basement for years to come. Total EDM style rebuild |
