I think the Flyers need to see what they can get for Nuevy and Streit. Pull the trigger if the price is right, if not, keep them and trade them next season if the team is once again out of a playoff position. Other trade bait: Read, Shultz, MDZ, Medvedev, Manning, Gagner, White, Belle and VDV can all go if they are worth anything on the trade market at all.

I like many of the core pieces to this team (including Schenn) but it's time to plan for next season and bring in the youth. This team is D.O.N.E.

And I agree with you Bill, Mason has been excellent. The Philly sports media are a bunch of goons.

I largely agree with this post. I think the goaltending falls closer to Vezina caliber than it does Leightonish, but other than that I agree.

To elaborate...I think cousins looks good in the NHL. I think Morin stays in the NHL and I am really interested to see if they let Konecny stay next season

- YuenglingJagr

Funny thing is I think the Flyers lack top end talent but have plenty of 3rd and 4th line type in the AHL. Guys that can fit the roles which will be needed and can replace the Whites and Vandeveldes.

They will be cheaper and I think provide just as much and possibly more then what they are getting now there.

I'm at peace with them missing the playoffs this season for the fact they did battle and show guts this weekend. Also i think with Brayden Schenn taking a step this season and the emergence of Ghost, who gives us that threat from the blueline we haven't seen in years, Moving vinny all were huge positives this season. If Morin and Provorov can play next season in addition to a possble sprinkling of viable third liners via free agency/trade etc., this might be a whole different team next season. I'm happy with the goaltending, it's not vezina caliber but it's not leightonish. Finally Hakstoll hasn't looked shabby in his first season, just shows the comstant stubborn habits of playing certain guys like umberger who give you zilch game in and game out when they could at least give some young guys a shot.

There will most likely be a number of guys like Neuvirth available, should Mase not agree to a shorter-term extension. Reliable goaltending (+/- league-average SV%) isn't that rare of a commodity -- Flyers just did a bad job of identifying talent at that position before Mase came along.
- Tomahawk

And it's not we're saying they should definitely move on from Ma$e. He'd likely ask for a deal around 5yr $30M this offseason. I don't see any team paying more than that in FA, so whats the point in getting the deal done this summer?

you want to move on from mason?

It's pretty much a given that one of them won't be here by the end of next season.

And that's what I say.

It's not has Mason been good more then it is do I commit less money to Neuvirth moving forward or do I pay more for Mason?

What are the PROs and CONs to all of it because the team seems to be getting in shape to take steps forward in 17-18. Where they aren't just good but a threat to make noise.

I would keep Mason. He's got a longer track record. Yes Neuvirth has been great this year, but he's never played on this level before. If they keep Neuvirth and move on from Mason it may be fools gold.

Agree somewhat

I could see Read if there is a good offer. Also depending on what they can get for Streit he could be moved.

I could also see them make something of a prospect for prospect type deal. Hagg for a forward type deal.

Yea I didn't mean the goaltending was closer to leightonish
Anyway i think for next season the magic number is 2: 2 forward upgrades, 2 blueline upgrades, maybe 2 or more are in house already, we shall see.

I love Mason.

The puck handling and ability he has shown to be a true game changer night after night.

My only concern going forward is the injuries. Say what you will but he was rushed back in his first few and now its starting to bite them in the ass.

Just a nutter's opinion.

Making deals for guys with term is hard right now with the stagnant cap, unless they're having great seasons.

I'd say this is pretty accurate.

I think it's going to be funny if the Flyers trade Gagner for a 3rd or 4th. They will have gotten Gagner for a 3rd and traded him for a 3rd.

Have to wonder about the umberger thing. Almost as if he had a green light to start benching him post all star break. First he doesn't get scratched the. They start calling up phantoms over him. I know he's not a center but they could have shuffled the lines a bit

Probably in the Vinny Rules now. Won't play unless multiple injuries. We'll see after the TDL comes. If guys are moved he could get back in but I would think they will want to see some youth in the lineup if they are too far back of the playoff the bubble.

Agreed. I was hoping for 3 years on MDZ. Everyone was freaking out when I said that. 2 years is fine though. He's not the ideal off ice leader you want, but his on ice play has been so good and valuable that it's fine.
- PhillySportsGuy

I think MDZ would be even a better player if he was not on the ice as much as he is. I think he is a 18 min a night guy not 20 min plus.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting.

I have complained about Hak's lineup decisions quite a bit, but we will really never know for sure what input Hextall is having and how much blame/credit he should be getting. The coach sets the lines, sure. But the coach also talks to the GM every day. And when Hexy called up Cousins, there was no chance it was just so he could sit in the stands.

The team is going to look vastly different next season. Unless something dramatic happens such as injury or poor performance in training camp, Provorov and Konency will be on the roster. Provorov is a pt/game dman and now a +39, I'm not sure what he needs to learn at the junior level. Hakstol could shelter his minutes to start the season and hopefully see him increase responsibilities throughout the year. The same goes for Konency.

This is a transition year, if they make the playoffs is a bonus. At least Coots and B. Schenn tooks steps forward. I would be surprised if B. Schenn wasn't signed to a bridge contract. He's a top 6 winger who will get you 20+ goals a season. The problem with Schenn was the hype he received before playing in the NHL. He won't live up to the hype, but still is an effective 2nd line forward. I was hopeful for Raffl, but at this point I'm okay letting him walk with Konency and Leier possibly ready.

Yeah for sure didn't help him or us fans out when as soon as he got traded some analyst compared him to Richards. If I'm not mistaken, they may have even said he can be better than Richards.

I don't know. I guess if they removed him from the PK, that would be ideal. I still like him getting a ton of ES minutes though. He's been so good at even strength since joining the team.

He was also labeled "best player not playing in the NHL" at the time of the trade. Schenn seems to have found his niche this year playing a second line winger role. I'm hoping Konency over time can fill that other winger spot next to Coots/Schenn on the second line.
