I think all this Stamkos/Van talk is just a way to drive up the price for Toronto, how would TO fans react to Van signing Stamkos (I want nothing to do with this by the way)

fair enough. In my mind there is not much in the D UFA department, the only D-man I see being obtainable through trade is Hamonic, and I think they want d back so that's not a significant upgrade. I see a glaring hole at 1c that Stamkos could fill. Vatanen is possibly obtainable, but again will require assets moving and Anahiem is against the cap so we have to take on dead weight. We're going to have 20 mil in cap space? 9 to stamkos. Draft. Stamkos takes over team when Hank/dank retire and the nweve got 14 mil in cap space to resign the guys weve developed around Stammer. That's my thought. But I don't think he chooses Van.

wouldn't hate it, but Stamkos is quite a bit better and a bit younger than Lucic and a center. Stamkos is 25, pretty ideal guy to bring in when you plan on contending in two or three years.

Unless Gary's Gang fudges the numbers, the salary cap will not be increasing next year and will likely be going down just because of the Canadian dollar. That will put several teams in a bad situation where they won't be able to sign their 3rd contract RFA's to acceptable term or dollars. That's more likely to be where Benning picks up what will eventually be a top 3 D-man. Something more along the lines of what Calgary did getting Hamilton out of Boston. So forget the UFA's and start looking into RFA's who are behind solid top 4's on cap teams.
