But if you don't take a few dmen in 2-3 years you'll still have nothing in the cupboard. The only way to get a #1 Dman in today's NHL is to draft one, unless a Ryan Suter wants to come home to Vancouver. - golfingsince
Thats why I want to deal McCann for defense that is 1-3 years along in development. Dmen take longer generally and if we pick any of Mathews, Finntwins, Tkachuk, Dubois, McCleod they would be available next year or the year after.
I think with this forward group being further along the way to turn things around is to trade for d on the verge of breaking in to the league on a full time basis. |

Almost pointless? What nonsense is this? Are we subscribing to the " god please drop us some top four defenceman into our laps please?" Differance making defenceman need to be drafted and developed ...period , that's it. We havent drafted one in the first round since Bourdon and our defence today....really shows that. There is no magic trade coming where we pry away a young stud d man. There is no free agent move out there coming to save our day. The only option we have is draft and develop and plug the holes until we grow some of our own. So yes we absolutely should draft a defenceman at 7 and with our next two picks atleast after that. - Bullfrog77
I want to trade for one but if we cant yes we have to draft one. The ducks have 8-9 guys some locked up long term and have to resign vatanen and lindholm so if it takes prospect to land one then yes we do it. If we dont start trading and/or drafting defense we are going to look the oilers all though we already do... |

I'm not sure that the 29 actual NHL GMs hold McCann in as high of esteem as everyone on this board. Let's say someone projects his career path and stats to mirror those of Kesler, who do you expect to get in return for McCann today?

Right now? A first or a decent prospect. He's definitely NHL ready and young so he'd fetch something equivalent. |

Not a future top pairing D man that's just about ready to make an impact. We gotta draft one and then wait. |

I think people have to stop thinking we have some kind of glut in the middle. Hank is in his late 30's, Sutter is a stop-gap player and Vey will be 25 this summer and has 35 career points. Bo and McCann are the only guys that will be here in 5 years up the middle IMO.
Now if somehow we end up with a pick for Matthews, then maybe we can trade one of the 2 young guys we currently have. |

Its not about a glut in the middle. Its that dmen take longer to develop so if we can deal for one now that is a couple years ahead then its give you 2 years to find another center. Also, I dont see the sedins retiring for another 4-5 years at the rate they are playing I dont expect much of drop off.
Hopefully Buff resigns quickly or is not made available then Hamhuis will be the top Dman at the deadline unless the blues are actually going to deal shattenkirk which I doubt. |

Even if it takes us 5 years to draft and develop a good D-core, the team will be fine with the other prospects entering the 24-26 age range. |

drafting and patience. doesn't sound very exciting but, it isn't an overnight fix unless we suddenly land a ufa that can play in the top 4...

I heard Travis Green a few weeks back saying Subban has a ways to go. Great offensive game but has a lot to learn about the defensive part of his game. |
