You think he was trying to take out the guys knee? Looked to me like the Canadien tried to avoid the hit and ended up getting his knee clipped. Hip check is a legal check. You've got to get low to get your hip out like that.
- Dkos

You've got to get low, but if you miss a hip check and your form is clean, you don't go careening right into their knee cap with your hit. He looked awfully low.

They actually didn't look great at evens

Trended towards awful for much of the game besides the second and a late third surge

Yea, just looked at those two clips above. It does look like he stuck his leg out. Damn. I like Gudas, but he just goes too far too often

This was how I saw that play. Gudas attempted a hip check. It didn't connect.

I don't see how the player avoiding the check makes this a penalty on Gudas.

Last I saw, hip checks were legal, regardless of how poorly they might have been executed.

That was a reactionary, bad call.

I don't see 5 and a game there. I just don't.

After they decided it was clipping, it was a major plus a game because the player was injured.
- 77rams

Yep it's an automatic major and game misconduct do to injury.

Gudas had his worst game as a flyer.

Agree.

Hip checking...legal, but dangerous. If it's not executed correctly, there's a huge chance for a knee injury.

Gudas looked to be a little reckless with the hit and seemingly was too low, towards the knees. Plays like that should be penalized and harshly.

I never understood why the league even allows the hip check. It's a play that could go wrong very easily and if it does, it is usually disastrous. Even clean hits result in thigh contusions, groin strains/tears, hip bruises. Why bother? Get rid of it.

I do not think that he was purposely trying to take out the guys knees. A hip check is supposed to be hip to hip, not hip on knee.

I don't think it was meant to harm. He's just so damn reckless.

In the video it doesn't even look like he hit the knee on an adjustment. His low body level was kept going into and through the hit.

The way I saw it. The player wasn't avoiding it. Gudas missed with the hip badly and actually they got their legs intertwined. I think gudas got low enough and missed badly enough where clipping is a legitimate argument

I don't think he was either.

I fail to understand how this was 5 and a game.

I get that a hip check is dangerous, yadda, yadda, yadda.

They are still legal to deliver.

The Montreal player had just released the puck.

How was it late?

Honestly, on a team lacking emotion for past few years, and especially in the physicality department.

(frank) it. I love Gudas. All night long.

I like Gudas too, but I called him "Blue Line Rinaldo" when we got him. I knew he had a reputation.

I've just never seen a call that long after it happened and for that length of time. 5 and a game WAY long after it actually happened. That felt forced.

Kronwall does that poop all the time. I have a hard time with the penalty call there and no way should that have been 5 and a game. Game moves fast. Doesn't look like any intent to injure at all.

The late call on Gudas was nonsense but for the most part, I thought he was bad from the first puck drop in the first period right to the end.
