No.....my point was they had a good foundation of players before they drafted their stars in Toews and Kane. If you'd have read the whole conversation you'd know what I was talking about.

Drafting well outside of the first round is equally as important to be successful.

this is also why edmonton has been so brutal for so long. a monkey picking names out of a hat for all those years more than likely would have at least found one player not in the first round that would have made the team

You have to build with the draft and once your loaded with a team of drafted players and your ahl team is stocked then you can start to add free agents and older players until then your just setting the team back. I have no problem with trading prospects if its for other prospects to fill areas of need (see the defense) but when you are one of the worst teams in the league you dont look for a quick fix. Like ive said before the last thing I want is 10 years of being a bubble team.

The point was starting off to be if you had to trade for a good Dman it will cost you. If you have the pieces to do it , you should consider it.

Oilers were notorious for having a bunch of prospect forwards and not moving a few for a good Dman.

Very true. i know they havent won a cup since but 2009 colorado got Duchene in the first, oReilly in the second and barrie in the third, thats a solid draft
