My bad, Ruutu was their best pick(or Dan Cleary). All I'm saying is that drafting higher isn't necessarily the answer. There are entire drafts where they basically hit on nothing, including the 10th and 11th picks overall. Hitting on a couple of top 5 picks if you haven't drafted well beforehand will only prolong the agony. - golfingsince
See above, they drafted well outside of the first round which helped set them up.
2002 - Keith, Wisniewski & Burish
2003 - Crawford & Byfuglien
2004 - Bolland, Bickell & Brouwer
2005 - Hjalmarsson

Check out their drafting from '79 to '88. - golfingsince
Trevor turned out ok but I wish they'd have drafted Roenick. |

I agree, which goes along with what i've been saying. Stay the course and build the system, once the pool is built up then hit a couple of home runs. |

Exactly. The original Oilers did so well not just because of Gretzky, but because they hit on sooooooo many of their picks. |

Not a horrible choice . Canucks have been terrible over past years. Finally we are getting on track for the first time. About bloody time |

Trevor was a winger in junior, they converted him to center. Roenick was a talented natural center, cocky as hell but really talented. |

I'll be looking at a place with a guest house. You and the wife will be more than welcome when we buy it. Bring your golf clubs. |

4 out of those 9 were drafted in the 2nd round.
I Noticed you left Seabrook, Toews and Kane off of your list I guess th fact the most integral parts of the team with the exception of kieth were picked in the first round would not do your point well. Kieth was picked in the second.
What you and many seem to miss out on (scooby) is that the first round has the highest probably of players (whether d, f or g) of making the show. Not too many players that get drafted play, in fact its less than 30% per draft. |

I think if you seen his comment about drafting in later rounds was also very important. |

Buddy of mine who lives in Vancouver is originally from Nova Scotia, we may head out that way this year to bluefin tuna fish. |

I have to admit that I am a big Olivia Newton John fan ( I know) . I am enjoying this remake Grease Live.
I could say I am watching it because of the wife but she is snoring right beside me |

So list their first round picks since 2002 then, they didn't do great. |

Well if you make it out this way let me know. We aren't set up yet, may not be by that time but we'll still be able to BBQ and golf. |

No.....my point was they had a good foundation of players before they drafted their stars in Toews and Kane. If you'd have read the whole conversation you'd know what I was talking about.
Drafting well outside of the first round is equally as important to be successful. |

Yup, either hit on every 1st rounder or draft well outside the first round. Actually, you need to hit a few outside the 1st regardless. You need about 1.5 regulars drafted per year to be successful IMO. |

no doubt about it. But your top -6 guys and top 4 guys usually come in the first two rounds. There are always exceptions, Hjarmallson is a great example. But he is one of 8 guys out of 30 picked in that round to make it to the show. While 20 players in the first round have played in the NHL, which his pretty average I would say for a draft.
Late drafting is super important, no doubt about it. getting 1st and 2nd rounders is much more important. But I'm a stats guy, I like to play the odds 1/3 > 4/15 |

I'm saying all the things that I know you'll like
Making good conversation
I gotta handle you just right
You know what I mean
I took you to an intimate restaurant
Then to a suggestive movie
There's nothing left to talk about
Unless it's horizontally
Let's get physical, physical
I wanna get physical
Let's get into physical
Let me hear your body talk, your body talk
Let me hear your body talk
