Umberger really can't be faulted there. Weal really didn't make the right play, that's why Umberger went offsides.

Oh yeah, can't blame Umberger. Totally Weal's fault. Chases down loose puck, has two guys coming onto him, hits a wide open Laughton with a nifty pass, Umberger beats the puck in by a good 6 feet.

The reason why Umberger is skating hard ahead because he knows the right play for Weal is a dump in. Umberger is going to skate hard to get in on the forecheck, as he is ahead of the play there. That is the percentage play in that situation. Hockey is situational. A spin around back hand pass horizontally through the neutral zone is a very dangerous play, whether it connected or not, and you can bet that the coaching staff told him about it. The author showed his lack of knowledge of the game, by questioning Umberger's hockey sense. Umberger has been playing in the NHL a long time, and he knows what the play is. But hey, let's ignore the fundamentals of the game, and just pick on the team's official scapegoat, because he went offsides in a very fast game.

I wish I could get paid for breaking down simple plays to people, and explaining why a player went offsides. There would be plenty of opportunity to make some money!
