When Gudas iced the puck with 14 seconds to go in the 3rd, I was hoping for Hakstol to use the timeout.

I remember seeing Coots and a few others hunched over with their sticks on their knees, I was telling myself for sure Hakstol is going to call a timeout here since the guys looked out of gas. I was really surprised he didn't use it, it cost us possibly 1 or 2 points.

I think the players would've asked for a timeout if they felt they needed one. There is almost no reason not to use one if you are considering it at all

I don't think the players were tired, that's why the timeout wasn't used. Coaches will communicate with the players in that situation. Not using a timeout is not why the Flyers were scored on.

He's the same size as Doughty. He's sturdy and unafraid to play physical and he's absolutely tenacious clearing the crease. Sanheim has 3-4 inches on him and plays as soft as anyone. He's a giant on the back end though in terms of size. Doesn't always work out 1 for 1. Our top 6 right now has good size and is tough. Sure besides Lindblom the forward prospects are small-ish. But none or few of them are soft. Konecny plays as physical as any 6'4" guy (to his detriment sometimes). I'm sure another big guy will be added in the coming years, but the Flyers have plenty of top 6 w/ size on the roster at present.
- Mononoke

If you can play, you can play. That simple. The size of the fight, like Brayden Schenn showed last night against Phaneuf, is more important.

Speaking of smaller players, can anyone stop Patrick Kane? Guy is ridiculous this season.

I'm sure you pulled that from somewhere but I'll tell you Fazleev, NAK and Marody surely aren't 6'. If they are they certainly play smaller than their height/weight.

How many games have you seen them play this season? I'm assuming a lot given that you are making definitive comments on them playing smaller than their size. Marody is younger and pretty slim, but NAK and Fazleev are both very solidly built. Fazleev made good use of that size playing as the Russian shutdown center at the WJC.

Impossible to know the outcome!!!! Are you serious? Coots played 21min and almost 4min on the pk I think.

Does the extra minute give Coots some time to catch his breath, maybe win the draw ?
He was 57% on draws last night. Just saying they looked tired, and going on 3 on 3 in OT maybe they wanted to keep the timeout in the bank just in case on the pk or something who knows.

I'm sure Hakstol asked all te 5 guys on the ice and they felt a timeout was needed right.

Fazleev is built as sturdy as they come. He's not a giant or anything, but he's got a stocky build. Like Raffl. He doesn't play small either. The other two...yeah.

NAK is Read-like. Marody is years away.

I agree, though Brayden is NHL average size.

Look at Giroux or Konecny. Even someone like Kase. He is smaller than either. Whatever he's listed at is generous. But in the WJC he was tenacious as anyone. Completely unafraid to go to the dirty areas. Hexy clearly has a drafting philosophy and that's part of it. He doesn't care if you're small so long as the fight in you is big with skill to match. On the roster now, there is not a single top 6 player who plays with anything resembling a small game. I'm sure at some point they will end up drafting a 6'4" giant, but it shouldn't be for the sake of it.

I don't always trust those listings because they can be dated or inflated. He might very well be, but they're in the same ballpark. That's all I was saying. Whether one is listed at 5'10" 185 and the other at 5'11" 196, they're not far apart.

They're direct from the Flyers in September. The same source that let us know Ghost was up to 186.

Provorov is thickly built and 200 pounds. So is NAK.

Hakstol clearly looked out from the bench motioning if the players wanted a timeout. He even asked Gord Murphy if he thought one was needed. Not taking a timeout is not the reason they were scored on. The faceoff was lost, and Toronto got a good bounce. Calling a timeout give the opposition a chance to get organized and diagram a play. Unless the players are gassed, which they weren't, I prefer not calling a timeout. Couturier is a pro athlete and is in good shape. He handles that icetime on a regular basis.

Maybe Hakstol just doesn't know what he's doing, right?

Just look at Gostisbehere! He's at a disadvantage in some situations, but he's not timid, nor is he getting pushed around. He battles.

I've seen Fazleev a lot. NAK not quite as much but enough. Honestly, no one has time to watch all these games unless it's their job.

These definitive comments are still just my opinion so it's not like it's the word of the gods. Consider what you're paying for it.

How much have you seen them play?

Bill said Martel was the same size almost as Kase who is listed at 5'11" on the Flyers site. Read could be heavier now, who knows. It doesn't matter because they don't have to be exact to be in the same ballpark. They're not far apart physically. Jake is still listed at 215 lbs even though he dropped weight two seasons ago. Couturier has been listed at the same weight since he got drafted I think. Whatever we are arguing about seems silly, but for the record, I'm on your side with the Flyers being fine in the size department at present and for the future. Size and play style are not the same thing

Absolutely. He will put on weight yet too. You don't need to be physical if you've got smarts and a good stick. You just need to compete.

Now, Mr. Physical Gudas is listed at 6'0" 204. That's maybe slightly below average-average. He sure can't play physical and intimidating hockey.
