Imo the whole point of moving a player is ridding yourself of that salary. A good GM will be creative enough to move said salary for what he can get. I feel you are both setting the bar too low. Thats just my take.

Maybe you are a better negotiator than me.

If we are not going to make the playoffs and there's a team that wants to make a run and you can get a better return for Vrbata by eating salary, it has to be considered. What is the cost to the organization. Can you attach a monetary value on the difference between an early round or later round pick?

I know you want to save money for the owner, but when you are a team that budgeted to spend to the cap, in a city where you essentially market yourself as a cap team and in it to make the playoffs, eating salary to get a better return if it helps you in the long run should be a no brainer.

If he was trading someone with term, then yes you are correct. But Vrbata ends at the end of season as with Hammer. If he can get a little more value by retaining, why not do it?

It will be interesting to see what happens to Higgins and Burrows in the off season.

I don't mind eating a bit of salary if we are getting a good return.

I hope we move Prust before tdl too.

Buy out Higgins is my guess. Burrows is hard to say, trade and eat cap or buy out? Though I can easily see Burrows staying his final year.

I think he is trying to focus on his new team. If he has sour grapes he hasn't really lived up to his contract. Nobody claimed him. I really don't see him ripping up the AHL scoreboards anytime soon. If I was him I would do the same, keep my mouth shut and collect my pay check.

nope.

I always wonder about the behind the scenes stuff. was he rushed back from ir? is the injury an excuse? he must feel a bit betrayed by the organization but his play hasn't been up to par.

can't blame him. he does some media availability and then gets asked some bone headed questions.

Benning says "in a perfect world" they'd like players like Shinkaruk and Gaunce to be "overripe" before they get called up.

not sure if this was on 1040...

Another page out of the Red Wings system. There were tons of players playing for Grand Rapids who probably could have made the team sooner than they did.

The Detroit model.....very good idea, when you have players at the nhl level. We are thin and getting thinner. I could see Shinkarak getting one more year, but if we don't pick up some stopgap a after the deadline they probably will have to bring some more up

Good morning,

Very entertaining game in Brooklyn yesterday, although Benning says today that Henrik will be "out for a bit."

Paging Brandon Sutter...
