Not easy, but not really that hard either.
Like I don't want the Flyers stuck w/ contracts like Pouliot and Fayne, just because of how they looked via analytics. Toronto's basically getting the same production out of PA Parenteau and Hunwick, whom combined is costing them a fraction of the salary of just one of the aforementioned Oilers. - Tomahawk
1 year deals for any UFA we sign this summer. Yea PA, Hunwick, not to mention Fleishman, Stempniak, etc. There will be ample amount of bargain bin players available in the summer. |

3 years, 7.5 million would be the max I'd be willing to go. - BiggE
I wait to see the next 45 games....then I start to formulate a plan for Raffl...not sold either way.

That's not how you build a team. You bring players like that in for depth or as temporary stop gaps. I'm not interested in the bargain bin. I want to build a team.

One factor is overlooked. You want to build a team, not just a revolving group of players. You want players to grow together, and build chemistry and an identity together. - MJL
That's fine but they are still in deconstructing phase. You can start the building with the core players already signed and the youngster that will be filtered in. Anyone else should be stopgaps |

You could also take advantage of the slow start and get him for a bargain fair deal, if he would agree to it.

Pouliot got a 5 year $20 mil deal...that's a far cry from the 3 year $7 mil number we are bandying about. Or Fayne's 4 year $14 mil deal. That hypothetical contract isn't in the vicinity of those. In fact it'd be smart cap management in comparison. If Raffl got a deal like that I'd agree with you, but he won't and we aren't suggesting to give him one |

All things equal, if Raffl's lands in a comfortable salary-range (~$1.8M), I'd definitely lean toward keeping the player in the interest of continuity.
W/ so much dead cap-space tied up in non-player/non-performing characters, might just have to let Raffl walk if he's looking for a handsome payday. |

They're in a re-tooling phase. The conversation was about existing players, not new players.

If he's unwilling to sign a fair deal, and instead wants to test free agency, than you tell him go ahead, and come back to you. What you want to do is sign a player to the cheapest, fair deal you can. You don't want a disgruntled pissed off player, either. Raffl has the leverage of free agency if he wants to use it. Flyers shouldn't play that game. He's a good player, but not that good.

so, 11 goals in the ottawa-dallas game last night. clearly we need to shrink the nets and let the goalies wear bigger pads. |

I'll lay anyone 50-1 odds the Flyers don't score between zero and two goals tonight. |

That's one game. The NHL plays, what, over 1200 regular season games?

I think it's worth noting he's a favorite in the locker room -- everyone loves Raf the guy. And he seems really happy to be there. With the slump he and the team are in, he might be able to be had for less than a handful of months ago. And he might've pushed to stay anyway |

He's a valuable player. When you look at players in offensive slumps, it's kind of a catch 22 for a lot of players, and slumping is contagious. Not to excuse any players, but not all are capable of producing goals and offense on their own. It's almost as if they need others around them to score, so they can score. Certainly they have contributed to the situation, but they also need help getting out of it. Flyers are a team that lacks natural playmaking and goal scoring to start with. That's what makes getting out of this offensive black hole they're in, so difficult.

With so many valuable and solid players on the club, one should expect them to turn this turd around and lead us to the promise land.

What makes up a team? Just a collection of random players thrown together, or is it about how the pieces fit and gel together? How they compliment each other? Flyers have a lot of good players. They just don't have enough of the higher tier players, and they have too many players that are similar. Flyers issue is part talent deficiency, and part a mix of players issue.
