Why would I compare it to what Hartnell was like 3 years ago? Maybe you would, but I wouldn't. That doesn't make sense.
- MJL

I was literally asking what you would compare it to.

The Flyers cannot trade Hartnell today. He plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets. The trade did happen, which is why I'm looking at what actually happened. I'm not ignoring the players who were actually traded. That Hartnell was the better player between Hartnell and Umberger is a factor when looking at the trade.

You are being closed minded and stubborn to the point where it is hilarious. If you want to look at it that way then fine. The trade is what it is. It happened. A guy played for the Philadelphia Flyers but now he absolutely does not and the Flyers cannot trade him because he does not play for them. He plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flyers got some stuff for him, but the value of the return doesn't matter because it is set in stone and will not change. We just wasted 5 pages of a blog discussing something that was already done and will not change, so what is the point?

Don't try and say one side of the argument is absolute and the other is relative.

If you're claiming that I'm not looking and comparing the two players, and who is the better player as a factor in looking at the trade, you're completely wrong.
- MJL

You said name the other factors....I just think it was a bad deal...and what the Flyers gained was not worth it.

The value of the return does matter, what are you talking about? Seriously? How does looking at what anyone thinks the Flyers might get today, if they still had Hartnell, and traded him today, change in any way, what the return they got in the actual trade was? That's what is hilarious! I guess I'm having this discussion with myself. Also hilarious.

What do you want to judge? A fantasy trade or a real trade that actually happened?

Name the other factors that you claimed I was not addressing. Still waiting. That's fine that you think it was a bad deal. I don't entirely disagree with you.

How about an ALL TIME Flyers roster compiled ONLY of players that were drafted by the organization?

When did I say it would change what they got? My point is that if they traded him today (or the draft) they could have gotten something else which has a value that could be compared to what they actually got for him. If your argument is to ignore the value Hartnell would have to the Flyers if they didn't trade him, then there is nothing to discuss since you aren't comparing anything.

Could they have traded him to a different team? Could they have gotten more from Columbus? Will contract they got in return be worth getting rid of Hartnell? Could they get more or less for him today? It is all the same.

I guess I'm having this discussion with myself.

Tough one. Plenty of Centers to choose from. Defense is tough.

i have a question if we were to put B schenn, wayne simmons , or any other player on the trade block could we in return get a 1st line LW to play with Giroux and jake....if not then wait till the trade deadline get picks and prospects and try to dump some salary....not saying that a 1st line LW would fix all this teams problems but it is an area that defiantly needs an improvement

I did not state that you would change what they got. I'm aware of what point your trying to make of what they could get if they traded him today. I'm simply stating that it's irrelevant because it's not reality. They can't trade him today.
How can my argument be to ignore the value Hartnell would have as a player to the Flyers, when looking at who was the better player between Hartnell and Umberger is a factor when looking at the trade? Hartnell for Umberger and a 4th was the actual trade. They were the actual players involved in a real trade, that actually happened.

Hahaha thats actually hilarious. You would compile a team that is basically what the flyers are now. A bunch of centers with no defense

Flyers have never drafted a defenseman that has turned out to be a bona fide star in their history.

Jim Watson was probably the best.

And yet we are sure 3 or 4 of the recent draft picks will be great. I hope they do exceed past D-men picks and production
