If we look at the two major mistakes Laughton made in the game, one the decision making on the 3 on 3, and secondly, losing his check off the faceoff on the game tying goal, both are correctable errors with coaching. What's more important is that Laughton was one of the best players on the ice for the Flyers overall in the game, and there weren't many. That's what should be taken from the game concerning Laughton and his play.
- MJL

Laughton should be on this team opening night. He skated very hard. If Rj or VLC are in lineup over him ...something is not right. Barely noticed either one of them. Laughton worked hard

It's easy to blame Berube as being the worst coach in NHL history but this is pretty much the same group that got Laviolette fired so why do people think a 3rd coach is going to make them better? Especially when Gagner, Medvedev and Neuvirth are the only additions from a team that finished 7th worst overall.
- psuhockey

I won't lose my mind over a preseason game that I did not see, but I think there is a lot of truth to this.

Hakstol is here, in my mind, because the Flyers will need someone who can hopefully teach young players how to make an impact and keep them developing. But I have always felt Laviolette got totally screwed and Chief didn't get nearly the help that a coach could've gotten.

So, yeah. At some point -- and we are at that point -- it is the roster. The Flyers are doing the right things to get a stronger roster, a better roster. They are doing the right things in being patient and drafting.

But it wasn't Laviolette and it wasn't Chief.

I thought Schenn showed excellent patience in dishing that puck over to simmonds. Schenn and Jake were strong all game.
- Just5

Agreed. It's funny, you guys are going to think I'm the biggest Schenn fan, but really I'm overcompensating in a way because I really think others are being unfair. The complete lack of props on that play is a good example.

That said, I am not thrilled if they put him in Raffl's place as 1 LW. I'm not going to ding him like others for his lack of production there. But, what do they say about the definition of insanity....

Christ...the way that some of you are talking, we were outshot 85-2, lost the game 19-0, and had all of our players injured.

Yes, they were outplayed. Yes, the turnover in OT was horrendous, even for a rookie. And yes, the 3rd pairing of AMac/Gudas was pretty weak all night long. All of that said, they had a 2-0 lead late in the game against a very strong team set to contend for the division title and may have won in OT had Nash been called for the trip or Laughton not turn it over/get called for the hook (which I'm still looking for).

Oh, who am I kidding? THE SKY IS FALLING, TRADE EVERYONE AND DRESS ALL OF OUR ROOKIES!

Umberger can have a quiet game and be effective. VLC, on the other hand, has to be generating offense or he's ineffective. To me, Gagner and VLC should be the odd men out, assuming Raffl and Coots are ready opening night and there are no more injuries at forward.

Outshot 43 to 29, probably would've lost 19-0 if Mason wasn't godlike and Lundqvist was playing, and your best physical guy in Simmonds got female doged out by Kreider.

Game was pure domination for the Rangers.

It's still preseason though -- the Flyers have some roster concerns, but I don't think anyone's going to not show up for Game 1 because of last night's game

To me the worst thing Chief did was bounce guys in and out of the lineup and all over the ice in different combinations. People constantly comment that athletes love structure and even used that as an excuse for the sluggish start of the Pope game by both teams due to the earlier start. Well, there is nothing that will take a player out of his game more than having absolutely no idea about what his role is.

I'm hoping that having fixed roles will help someone like MDZ and maybe if he is still here, Luke Schenn. I was hoping the same for AMac but my confidence is wavering.

"female doged" is a good term for what Kredier did, good call. Got his panties in a bunch because of a hard, legal hit, threw a borderline dirty hit on an unsuspecting player, then ran away when Simmonds went after him. You nailed it. Tomas Sandstrom would be proud of him.

Flyers are in a tough spot. Obviously you have some bright spots and elite talent on the roster but there's so much dead weight between VLC, Gagner, AMAC, etc. that you guys are essentially wasting Giroux, Voracek, and Mason's prime years.

Gudas tried ending Stepans season with a dirty knee on knee guy. And let's just forget how Simmonds ran Kreider and bounced off him like a child hitting a brick wall.

I disagree about that in this regard: I don't think any player last season didn't know what their role was. I just don't believe that.

Chief knee-jerked with Brayden Schenn, early on. That happened. We all saw that.

But everyone else, to my mind, had pretty defined roles all season, to the degree where we were begging for Couturier to not be locked into a checking role so tightly. The defense rotation had MDZ sit for a bit too long, but tbh, none of MacDonald/Schenn/Coliacovo deserved to be in the lineup more than anyone else.

Just my opinion

Kredier is a d-bag and he will pay the price during regular season. 17 or 25 will take care of the Asshat

In reality Kreider will probably add Mason's decapitated head to his current collection. He'll put it right between Price and Anderson's.

I thought Schenn was one of the better players in the game. It was a really nice pass in heavy traffic by Schenn to give Simmonds a gimme.
- MJL

I was thinking the same thing....With Hextall's decision or inability to change the roster the Flyers have to hope the growth comes from within. Im not interested in trading one of the few secondary scoring threats unless one is coming back.

Kreider's game will always put a bulls eye on his back. It's a good thing he's that big and that fast.

I think Kreider can handle his own.

I think Manning has shown he can be a serviceable Dman especially at his cap hit.

couldn't agree more about Umberger....Vinny just doesn't fit and now it appears that his place will help keep Laughton in the minors, although I like him better then Bellmore...thats not good for a team looking to build a good, fast, young team.
