Interesting that many players aren't too keen on advanced stats. Drew Doughty: "I think that Corsi thing is a bunch of crap, personally"

- jimbro83

So what? Steve Yzerman is a HOFer and he uses it. Gretzky and Jordan are two of the best team athletes of all time and they both sucked at managing teams. Being a great player =\= being good at managing a team. Separate skill sets.

Define modern?

Jonathan Quick 2012: 16-4 1.41GAA .946 SVPCT.

- smellmyfinger

I'd agree that Quick was dominant, but so was the team in front of him which is why they went through the postseason so quickly. Thomas had a higher postseason adjusted save percentage in 5 more games. But I could definitely see the argument for Quick.

8. New Jersey Devils (Going for 30th place is in their best interest)

If the Devils are trying to be competitive, then I guess it would be fine, but it's not in their best interest because of the lottery change.

USES it, it's a lot different than basing every single thing around it, which is what this blog did.

Well for one you were calling it worthless so that already refutes your argument. Secondly, we don't know how much he is relying on it so it very well could be exclusively or almost exclusively.

Am I the only one who would be a little concerned with Letang and Maata as my #1 and #2 defenders?

That's because he saw that Muzzin is ranked ahead of him most years so I don't blame him Especially since 99% would agree that Doughty is better.

No Pens fans are very concerned about health. No team has lost more minutes to injuries this decade than Pittsburgh and it's not even close. But at some point if the team is going to contend they have to stay healthy.

How can you bash the Jackets for their defense and simultaneously pick the Pens to win the division?

Pens easily have the weakest D depth of the 5 good teams.

1. Caps
2. Rangers
3. Isles
4. Pens
5. Jackets

Yes, because a meathead who took, like, mail-in high school and makes millions of dollars, is going to care to understand it.

Pens
Isles
Caps
Jackets
Devils
Canes

Rags

edit; (frank) the Flyers.

Seriously though, trying to pick this division is just grasping at straws. I think you have two teams considered favorites (Pens and Rags) and the Isles and Caps following close behind. Jackets and Flyers can pose a threat.

If the Jackets can actually stay healthy, they'll cause some problems. Isles and Rangers are definitely my top 2.

No way is CBJ better defensively than PIT. That's completely unsupported by evidence.

20. He’s never explained to me how his process works, but Tortorella has a way of looking at games through scoring chances. Breaking down how they happen gives him a true picture of what occurred. In a Tampa radio interview, Tortorella said he spent last season trying to learn about analytics. So what did he uncover? “You know what, not much…There are so many red flags going on with analytics. Corsi, Fenwick…(The year he coached in Vancouver), we were 10th in puck possession and finished 25th. Last year, LA was fifth and didn’t make it. It’s so media driven, it’s taken on a life of its own. It’s not Billy Beane, it’s an instinctive sport. It’s who you are playing against, and on a shot anything can happen. You have to be careful not to be controlled by numbers. You can’t sacrifice your beliefs to get along with the norm.”

Caps are the best in the division but you could make legit argument for any of the big 5. Injuries and trade deadline should decide it

1.Was
2.Pit
3.NYR
4.NYI
5.Colu

Best roster they've ever had, Rags losses and Pens D. That said we're not the best by much. As I said, any of those 5 could win it and I wouldn't be stunned. NYI and Colu have huge upside

As a Caps fan, I disagree that this is the best roster they've ever had. Is it the best roster, on paper, in the Ovechkin era? Yes.

Can Oshie or whoever, help turn the even strength play of our top line? I (frank)ing hope so.
