It's not just that. CHL teams get paid by NHL teams to develop the players they draft. A lot of teams wouldn't exist without that money. - Sammich
also delays ELC contracts from kicking in.. which ultimatley keep player salaries down and keep the stars with the franchise that drafted them longer |

Maybe each NHL team should be able to make one 'exception' to the general rule. At worst you have 30 19 year olds playing in the A' rather than the CHL. Keeping in mind that all those decision makers have an invested interest in doing what's best for the development of the kid. - The Law
Simple tweak: Any 1st round pick is AHL eligible. |

Marner. - Pecafan Fan
It looked like he was playing afraid, I don't think you will get a nine game stint out of him. Nylander has outperformed all the PTO so we will see about this, if you earn it you will play talk from the management. |

just leave it as is.. its working fine.
marner playing junior for a couple more years wont hurt him.. he will be playing under Dale Hunter.. who will coach him using the more than obvious pipeline of commentary and advice from the leafs, he will lead the team for 2 years, play in a couple WJCs and get some world experience, and likely a couple deep playoff runs
all as the go to guy
he wouldnt get any of that playing with the marlies. |

its not about helping the CHL team
its about helping the players
if you poach all the high end talent.. the guys coming into the league end up playing just mediocre players, so after some time, they arent learning as much OR being pushed as hard, which ultimately would lessen the quality of player being produced in canada.
also, if the canadian system is so f'd up, how come it is still EASILY the main pipeline for talent to the NHL? - Dozzer
And there it is, folks - CHL produces the most NHL players, so the CHL can't be criticized.
But sending a 15 year old 2,000 km away to live with a family he's never met is a good way to run a league. Have him work for peanuts, while the owner sells tickets at a profit.
It's a league based on slave labour. |

are you just conveniently ignoring my point on this?
you want to deplete the CHL of its highest end talent and you dont think thats going to effect the quality of player coming out of the league? |

Nylander did. - mykokes
nylander did not
he got secondary minutes .. if nylander was playing in the CHL.. he would have been a leader and prime line 1 guy
this year is nylanders year to lead the marlies.. maybe even next year as well |

Magnitogorsk is like 10,000kms away...
But if I were 15 being that far from the rents would be a (frank)ing dream come true.

I think if Marner plays on the Marlies next year, another Canadian kid will get the opportunity to be on the 1st line and 1st line PP, furthering that kid's development.
And I think it would be of greater benefit for Marner to play in the AHL. This year is great for him back in the O - next year could very well just be retarding his development. |

I'm sure it would be.
I just have sincere doubts that would be good for your future.
One of my BFFs from public school went to the Soo. They talked a really good game about how school was the #1 priority, blah blah blah. The reality was 100% different once he landed there.
And the stories about Bob Probert's time there were truly frightening (the stories were still quite fresh when my friend arrived there). |

I'm not speaking about Marner specifically - although it'd be nice for the Leafs to have a 3rd option if necessary next fall. Lots of kids fall into that 'too good but not good enough' category. Options are not a bad thing and teams aren't going to intentionally make poor decisions with their investments. |

by your logic any round 1 pick can go to the AHL
so at 18 the best go.. then the kids coming in never actually have to play against developed talent.. which would ultimately lessen the effectiveness of the CHL as a development league
ALSO.. most teams are not toronto so to have someone else pay to develop their prospects that doesnt cost them RFA years is a huge bonus |
