what I dont get is how Polak is terrible at reducing chances and getting pucks out. terrible gf/ga% He is fine.. Gardiner is the opposite but sucks - senstroll
polak needs a strong system
he doesnt have the wheels or skill to just take it out himself
he was also used against strong opposition forwards cause guys like gardiner could barely contain bottom 6ers |

@SWhyno: #Leafs cut down to the 46 players (2 teams) Babcock wanted to keep around. Gauthier, Leipsic, Leivo to AHL camp, Dermott, others back to JR. - burn
I was wondering when the next set of cuts were to take place. |

watch Gardiner's after game interview from last night. He was asked what Babs was telling him on the bench all game long. He said "just the small details, telling me about things I didn't even know I was doing wrong, like stick positioning and how to play along the boards."
If this is the case, and he actually learns and applies what he is being told, I can't see how his game doesn't improve. - vermie22
This perfectly describes Gardiner.
I think the guy has a huge upside.
But wow, does he ever have to learn to play hockey properly. |

If Babcock can get the game tilted back towards the other end of the ice more often then everyone will quickly start praising Gardiner, Reilly, Phaneuf and realizing that the low-skill guys are now liabilities. |

The only thing that stick with me from last night is when Gardiner tried to skate the puck out of the d zone but skated it into two habs and almost turned over a 2v0 |

If he didn't know stick positioning and board play until now, htf has he made it this far as a defenseman? |

exactly and I think MB loves the challenge to teach and mold and will be working like mad to impart his knowledge on the whole roster. We will have to wait and see if Gardiner can apply what he is being taught. |

I'm ok with that. Lets get the game there more often and we'll need a few guys like him.
But yes, he needs/can get better in his own end as well. |

gards has a ton of skill
and when the puck is on his stick he is fine
its his play away from the puck.. and so long as he has more brains in that skull of his than say.. a fly on a pile of poop, babs will be able to teach him
i will bet Babs is looking at Gardiner as something to mold. - Dozzer
Gardiner is a good player when it comes to just playing on instinct.
When he has to think about a play, that's when he runs into problems.
If he can get best practices in the dzone drilled into his head until it becomes instinct... he could be a reliable top-4 guy. |

Guys like Gardiner will always look suspect when the team is on their heels and spending 60% of the game in their own zone. If Babcock can get the game evened out that'll mean more time in the Ozone and guys like Gardiner and Reilly will look much better. - The Law
thats all i am saying.. what gardiner lacks can be taught imo.. i am saying nothing more.. but now that he has a good teacher, it will be on him to learn it |

I don't get why you constantly defend a guy...Gardiner is just not that great. Franson has some good #'s too...I don't see you defending him to the grave?
When Gardiner drops the puck and runs to avoid a hit...is constantly out of position and isn't that great offensively?
I havent watched this year ( so going off his Leafs days so far )
I'm hoping he has a great year and proves me wrong
Polak's ok...I've never said he's got great skill...but he can play a role and isn't afraid to do some of the little things.
