I will never understand not drafting the best player available, excluding goaltenders.

Devils most certainly have a talented, young mix of defensemen/defensive prospects. No argument there. But taking Provorov would have allowed them to (potentially) move one, and I think we all know cheap, talented young defenseman are the rarest commodity in the NHL. You can fill other holes by overstocking the cupboard with quality prospects.

I've been begging to get rid of Merrill for a forward prospect. and you're right, drafting prov would've made that a larger possibility. That being said, I can see why we took Zacha, we desperately need him to become a special player. Regardless, we should've found a way to take Zacha and also trade up into the teens and take another skilled forward. Besides Zacha, we don't have any worth mentioning. I think we're going to have an easy time building a bottom six from within our pool, which generally is a good thing, but damn we desperately need goals.

I promise I'm not trying to just disagree/pick a fight...but I would have taken Provorov and then did what you said, trade back into the first round...but take your skilled forward there.

There was enough forward talent in the mid-to-late first that you could have still picked a quality player. Hell, had they got on it earlier they could have potentially flipped a defenseman to EDM for the pick that the Isles ending up taking Barzal with. I couldn't be more thrilled, adding Barzal into the mix.

Imagine if the Devils finished the first round with Provorov and Barzal? Critics would have raved about that haul.

I'm pretty much agreeing with you for the most part. Although I'm absolutely thrilled we didn't take barzal at 6, him falling to you guys (great pick btw) makes me happy we didn't. Many had us doing that. Only reason I really don't mind the Zacha pick is because he (hopefully) will become a #1 scoring center for us. As we all know, Travis Zajac aint cutting it. I like the idea of having a 6'3 215 pound 18 years old center in our prospect pool. For me personally, I would've liked Prov and Konecny, hell we could've got him after the teens apparently. But i wholeheartedly hear your point and you're not wrong. the logic is clearly there.
