I think it's unreasonable to expect a young player like Morin not to make some mistakes. It really should be expected. The key is how does he learn from them and get better. That's what will determine how good he becomes. Pulock didn't really stand out last night.
- MJL

I agree with you. That's why I think Morin needs one or possibly even 2 years in the AHL. Let him make the mistakes in Allentown and learn there.

My argument is that, even if he's one of your best 9, I'd prefer him to go back down to the OHL for one more year, refine his game ever more, and come back next year. That way, you save 1 year of his ELC, and, seeing as I don't see this team as a Stanley Cup contender right now, I'd prefer the Flyers to have him on the roster relatively cheaply when they are ready to compete for one.

And yes, it's just been one game against a B squad.

- jmatchett383

I agree with you. It was a B squad, and as Hexy said, the regular season is a whole different speed than pre-season. He won't make a significant difference in the team's trajectory this season anyway.

Nak and Martel were flying around but unless they gain serious size I worry about a top 6 that would have to include Nak Martel and konecky a long with under sized guys like giroux. I don't see any of those players being able to fulfill a bottom 6 role.
- Tfaehner

If Tampa Bay ever wants to have success, they shouldn't let Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat, and Nikita Kucherov play together. They average 5'10 and 170lb. Too undersized, they'd never work as a successful line together. Right?

Thanks Bill. I don't know how you kept one eye on each game, but kudos. Konecny sounds like a winner so far. I just hope that he doesn't burn out with his style of play. Nothing like continuous upper body injuries; shoulders, ribs, etc...
But, it sounds like good stuff to take away from each game. Come on October....

I'm sure Mike Richards could give him some pointers of dealing with those types of injuries.

Still can't quote from page one, WTF

Kudos to Vinny for burying the pp goal, at least he still has a shot. However, skating on a line with Gagner and Umberger, he looked like he was clearly having trouble keeping up, this is not good. All I can say is, I hope he likes popcorn.

- BiggE

If Umberger has his speed back, Vinnie doesn't have to be first in the zone. He might be better served coming in a little later and taking the pass in the slot. He can create offense up high.

Here is the thing with Vinnie. His goal was a scorer's goal. He had the puck at a tough angle, but he was patient, waited for the goalie to make his move and then buried it. A lot of guys, especially the young players we have, would have shot it right away into the goalie's pads.

I don't know if he'll work out this year, and yes, I hope they can dump him. But if we're stuck with the Lemon maybe we can make lemonade.

I'd rather him score a "scorer's goal" by stepping around a defender and ripping a shot high glove side. I understand that, yes, he didn't just mindlessly whack away at it like a rookie, but I wouldn't expect any seasoned NHL player not named Zac Rinaldo to do that.

I'm not saying bail right away, at least not fully. But if he wants to stick, he'd better do his best damned job to look at himself as a rookie trying to make the club, and I just didn't see anything of note about that last night.

Gagner and Vinny cannot play on a line together whatsoever. If you lay a finger on either one they are done and out of the play. Softer than charmin. i hope vinny doesn't dress at all this year.

I was going to mention Richards' strict workout routine of alcohol and easy women, but I guess that works, too.

Anyone else think that a 7-year, $29M contract for a guy with 77 total games of NHL experience is a tad crazy?

I covered the Allentown game in the press box. I had only the NHL.com game sheets to go by for the Brooklyn game. The blog reflects it as there are no details about actual plays in the game.

Last year, when the Flyers had their split squads against the Caps in Philly and the Leafs in London, I had a stream of the London game open on my computer while covering the game in Philly. At least I was able to somewhat follow the London game.

Definitely a gamble on both sides.

What if the kid is better than his AAV?

For Klefbom? Not at all. Kid is a stud in every sense of the word. Bought out FA years. That deal will pay back its weigjt in gold when McDavid is off his ELC. Great contract.

People forget Klefbom was an 18 year old playing well against grown men in the SEL at one point. Kid is a beast. People said the same thing when Nashville signed Josi to a similar deal.

Hmmm. Too bad about vinny. Was hoping he could rebound and play an effective role his last years.

Great to hear about umberger. I think I read on someone else's post that he looked like he had some good speed too. Is 15 goals, 20 assists realistic for him?

- benjichronic

I'd say so. He should be a lock on the pp2 unit

Do you think Vinny is soft because he's been hurt in recent years or do you think him a soft player?

I think Vinny's recent work is subject to criticism, but soft isn't the description that comes to mind.

They're so bad together Tampa put up a poster to warn other teams what not to do.

Not going to be a very effective player if he's just going to lurk up high waiting for a pass. Today's NHL game is all about the forecheck, and puck pressure. I didn't see a player who looked stronger and is able to help in those elements of the game. He's not going to get enough chances and pot enough goals to make it worthwhile. My hope is that it's just the first pre season game and he'll get better. The signs in last nights game do not have me optimistic.

Not a ton.

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=779904

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6-5, 196-lb pound defenseman Philippe Myers to an entry-level contract, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

Myers, 18 (01/25/97), was attending Flyers Training Camp on an amateur try-out after spending two seasons with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He has appeared in two games so far this season with the Huskies, going scoreless. Last season, he posted eight points (2g-6a) and 55 penalty minutes in 60 regular season and added two assists and 15 penalty minutes in six QMJHL playoff games.

Basically, he's big and very "raw." He's on an ELC so he's likely back to juniors for 2 more years.
