This is just not correct. I just replayed it. They were cycling. Dman went up the boards and Gagner met him and poked it behind the net. Simmonds got the puck and went behind the net and dropped it to Couts. Gagner went around the net on the cycle but Couts reversed. The puck went to the point and then moved quickly to the other side. Simmonds went to one side of the net, Gagner to the other but Streits shot missed the net. Couts got the puck and shot it but it was blocked. Gagner cycled to the left face off dot, grabbed a loose puck and fired wide. Couts corralled the loose puck and dumped it behind the net. Simmonds gathered it and made a nice play to pass it to a wide open Gagner.

You obviously saw what you wanted to, but he was involved in the entire play. Most importantly he found open ice at the right time.

Sure it's correct, Gagner was just hanging around while Simmonds and Couturier did all the hard work on the puck. Gagner found himself in the right place at the right time, and was the beneficiary of a great pass and defensive zone breakdown. Trust me, I don't want to see that, but Gagner is just not working hard out there, and hasn't for two straight games. He doesn't move his feet, and isn't hard on the puck. I'm going to give him a little bit of a pass since it is pre season, but he needs to be better once the games mean something. That's not what Hakstol is looking for.

Scoring on an open net with poor coverage is all well and good. That doesn't change the general lack of effort that Gagner is playing with.
- MJL

Read my last post. But here is the thing. Different players will bring different elements to the game. You've pointed out that Raffls job is to do the dirty work to retrieve pucks, clear space and let G and Jake do their thing. Well the opposite is true too. Someone has gotta put the puck in the net. Someone has got to make plays. And sometimes that means their mission is to find open ice at the right time. Last year I saw lines work hard and cycle all shift long and never get in a position to get off a good shot.

if all goalies had to wear dryden's pads, scoring would be prolific

Haha. When someone says something that is blatantly not correct, technology is there to help call him on it.

Doesn't Eller compete every night, though? I know he is one of those guys who always makes you think the goals are going to come, but I always thought his effort level was high when I watch you guys play
- AllInForFlyers

Yeah, not the best comparison. He dies work hard and he's oretty sound defensively.

The offence never seems to come, though.

I watched it 5 times. He went to open spaces where he could accept a pass. The puck carrier went in other directions. He stole it from a dman once, and gathered a loose rebound a second time. He had three shots on that shift. When Simmonds didn't have the puck, he skated the same way Gagner did...glided to open ice waiting for a pass. Same with Couts.

I'm not saying how he played the rest of the game. But that shift? You are not correct.

Here's the thing, Raffl is hard on the puck, and can put the puck in the net. Gagner isn't that good offensively, that he doesn't have to play the rest of the game. If this is the Gagner that we see in the regular season, that doesn't bode well for him. Unless he sees a lot of the hideous D coverage that he saw on that play.
The NHL is a puck pressure, skating, forechecking game. We need a team that plays with pace, is hard on the puck in all 3 zones. I don't want players that glide, and don't work away from the puck. If they're that kind of player, better score a lot of goals, and rack up a lot of assists. We know Gagner has good hands and puck skills. I need to see more. Have to move your feet, especially if you're not a good skater to start with.

Again, I'll reiterate, it is pre season, and some players just aren't motivated in the pre season.

I'm absolutely correct. He was floating around. He was the beneficiary of strong work by his teammates, and porous D coverage.

1.5 preseason games does not a season make. But it's all I have to go on, just like everyone else. Guess I shouldn't comment on a player's performance until April.

Sorry, I douched it up there. Sometimes I overreact to the same guys getting "picked on" with blatant bias against them, or the tendency to dub a guy an all star after one period.

I'm not expecting to see much from Provorov here but he's been getting turned around and stuck playing catch up a lot too.

The Flyers young defenseman with the puck are pretty good. Without the puck, not the same. Need more development.

I think he and Ghost make for an awkward pairing. Both like jumping up in the play and both have looked real tentative in that regard

No problem. I want Gagner to do well. And you're right on his goal, he wasn't just floating. He wasn't doing the dirty work of Simmer and Coots but he read it well and got some shots off. I just really want to see more from him after watching him through 5 periods. He's not generating nearly enough.
