Maybe the schenns could be packaged for a roster player

What a joke they've become.

Being stuck with Vinny on the roster makes it difficult to carry Laughton at the start of the season.
- BiggE

From everything hextall hasktol have said if Laughton is the best 3c and proves he's clearly a top 9 player he will stay. And they will figure out how to make that work. You could waive Manning white Porter no problem.

If he scores 10 goals but takes 140 penalty minutes over 82 game season is he better than 5 goals and 10 penalty minutes but better defensive play from Porter?

My argument is not Porter > White it's a comparison to everyone was in arms that Schenn was on a line with Porter but white Porter Bellemare vv all play the same role to me and none should have a spot over a budding prospect like laughton. If yesterday is an indication of where the season is going Laughton Schenn looked like a formidable third line pairing. Which means 2 people of those 4 will be odd men out. And of Vinny makes the line up that's 3 of those 4 that have to sit.

- Tfaehner

That was more about the deep-seated issues a few people here have with Brayden Schenn.

I do think Bellemare is a lock to make the top 12, but Laughton, Lecavalier, VdV, White and Porter are all fighting for spots. Which is good.

I really don't see them making any trades prior to the start of the season, nor do I see any of the kids starting the season on the NHL roster. The only real question, is do they carry 14 forwards and 7 D, which would mean Manning is waived. Or, do they carry 13 forwards and 8 D which keeps Manning on the roster, but leaves Vinny as the only spare forward.

Of course, now that I've posted this, Hextall will probably trade 2 veterans next week.

Very possible and I'd be happy with that. The only thing I'd likely change, is I'd flip Umberger and Gagner because I don't think that Gagner can succeed in a 4th line role. Also, because I have no faith in Vinny whatsoever, I'd still carry White or Porter to be my 13th forward and just go with 7D.

Agreed. I think hasktol made a statement when Laughton was put with the nhl group. I also think pairing him with Schenn whose seen as a top 9 shows they want him to make this team.

Gagner honestly did not impress me yesterday. At all. I almost forgot he was there.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to expect from him. A team like Arizona, who was desperate for offense last year, wanted no part of him and that has to make you think a bit. I thought that he would be a nice fit in Giroux's spot on the 2nd pp unit, but I'm not sure if he can deliver enough at ES to be a guy you keep on the roster. He really needs to be a top 9 guy too, as he doesn't have the skill set to be a 4th liner.

It's the first day of camp with a new coach, so this is all grain of salt type stuff, but...

It was also about Vinny being given another shot at the ring (which makes sense given his contract) while the much younger B Schenn has been (for the first day of camp) dropped as low as he can go.

That being said, competition and playing hard is what it's all about, so I'm all for every player being given a fair shot to bust his ass and prove himself to the new coach.

Agreed. The Coach hasn't made up his mind based on one scrimmage, where as the rest of us already have.

I'd rather have Laughton as my center than Vinny. No one on that Umberger-Vinny-Gagner line is a lock for the top 9, but Brayden Schenn is.

It's still a big if but if Laughton makes team it'll be a top 9 role otherwise it'll be ahl 1c.

I'm looking forward to watching how things develop under Hakstol. I think it could get interesting as the players adjust to his (apparently) demanding style. And they know Hextall's got his back and this coach is going to be around a while.

I think it is - or should be - Brayden's spot to lose, just not sure what the coach thinks. I'm really hoping for good things from Umberger and Gagner, and if Vinny can find his game again, that would be awesome.

And Hakstol has Vandevelde's back, which makes for a winning season.

Vandevelde-Giroux-Voracek.

Book it

I'm getting just a hint, a delicate whiff of sarcasm...

The length and term of Hakstol's contract would suggest Hextall has his back. And VDV on the top line could be the rebirth of the Legion of Doom: The Doomiest.

Haven't been to Allentown for a game yet, but hear that the facility and rink is very nice. Can anyone who's been there attest to the atmosphere and game viewing experience?
- Fryman4

I was there for a game late season, like the other poster side downtown
Allentown is Meh, the arena is nice. Opening season lots of support lets see how it goes.. You will always get some people coming to see the Flyers of the Future as it gets marketed not necessarily team fans.

Viewing ability from the concourse as you walk around, lots of $$ concessions pay NHL prices. Expect them to try and access your wallet and credit cards in many ways(legally) There is parking in garages close by and almost attached to the rink.

One weird area where there is a club or restaurant and you walk through what looks like a large hotel corridor before you are back in the open concourse.

LOL

I have the same "deep-seated issues" with Brayden Schenn that a guy like Dave Maloney had with Sam Gagner's 41 points last season, yet still cut him loose

It's amazing how the media who cover the team asked the same questions yesterday about the Schenns, but "a few people" who reflexively defend him just can't seem to swallow the fact that he clearly isn't someone who the Flyers view as a core piece

Brayden Schenn is just another player on the roster who fills a role. His placement in practice shows it. His contract status shows it. His performance thus far in his career is the reason for it

Any deep-seated issues "a few people" have would be cleared right up if he played better over 82 games, period

Being stuck with Vinny on the roster makes it difficult to carry Laughton at the start of the season. That being said, I'd go with:

Raffl-Giroux-Voracek
Read-Couturier-Simmonds
Umberger-Gagner-Schenn

and the 4th line would be some combo of Bellemare, Porter, White and VDV with Vinny being the 14th forward.

Quick, everybody:

Which top-9 forward opened his contract-drive season playing with two guys whose career highs in points in a season is eight and six, although one was a rookie? With one of those players on a two-way contract, and the other not subject to waivers -- meaning they could very easily not even be on the opening night roster, because the Lehigh Valley Phantoms are calling?

Was it Claude Giroux? Jakub Voracek? Wayne Simmonds?

A once-crippled R.J. Umberger? How about Coyotes discard Sam Gagner?

Nope, it was wunderkind Brayden Schenn, who, amazingly enough, no one should ask how odd it is for HIM to be on that line, of all the forwards the Flyers have

Nothing to see there!

What do you guys think the Flyers would/could get for Streit, B Schenn package?

say IF Ivan and Morin, or Ghost, really do impress and beat out the vets... Streit is the easiest one to move / has the most to offer for another club.

Streit's premium price will come at the deadline.

The two together though, that should return a very nice young forward or a mid round 1st and good prospect.

Hexy is just trying to showcase an entire line as trade bait.

Sad thing is that that line would probably be an improvement for the Devils.

That's what is bizarre to me -- no one is looking at a single member of that line and saying "whoa, that guy is the missing piece for us"

Wheels is on an NMC, so, yeah. Fine. He's going nowhere

No clue how healthy Umberger truly is, and no clue if Gagner has an NHL game that is going to translate for him to even be a factor this season

But it's just an odd line in that the contract statuses, health history and performance issues of all three makes them just a bizarre fit, and if you are just trying to keep them away from Brayden Schenn for that reason, it's just going to be hard to hide anybody from them for very long
