Ok.. i will counter
say setoguchi makes the team and earns a 1 year contract
a second line with him and grabner gets put together
they enjoy some success getting top 6 mins
flipped at the deadline for a 2nd each
leafs get their seconds back.. drafted in line with what hunter and dubais are building
ta da. - Dozzer
They combined for a total of 13 points last season. All of them Grabner's. |

some of these guys are gonna get a lot of ice time and the Leafs could find themselves playing from behind a lot. 1-2 of these guys could fall ass backwards into a 20-goal season and if they do, you'll find takers for 3/4 rounders. maybe even a second. the guy who thinks Grabner might bring a first is on glue. - DoubleDown
again those are big assumptions, it's possible non of them pan out and the Leafs get nothing at the trade deadline.
also other GM's will start to catch on...guys get more ice time in T.O. and there numbers go up by virtue of averages. Then when obtained to add the precious depth contenders are seeking, the players regress to crap once their ice time is reduced. Look at Santorelli, Winnik and Franson last year...what impact did they have on the contenders that obtained them...nothing. If I was a GM for the other teams I would stay clear of any of the trade offers from the Leafs at the deadline. Especially these 1 year reclamation projects/illusions. |

so so so short sighted
man you guys need to take a deep breath and actually think about something for once - Dozzer
How is it short sighted?
It's recycling what we have in the hopes of stockpiling lower caliber draft picks. You've yet to disagree with that.
What is the long term vision behind opening the space for PTO's, because if I'm not wrong.. You're arguing that to be the benefit of this move.
Did I miss something? When did PTO's turn into monster deadline hauls? Franson, Winnik, santorelli.. All were signed to contracts and didnt need PTO's to land on a team. Is there an example of a team using PTO's to fetch a better return than a couple prospects already drafted in the 2nd round?
As far as I can see, opening up space to sign PTO's isn't some incredible long term plan.. |

Apparently Setoguchi isn't drinking or smoking crack or whatever the heck else he was doing before. (he entered substance abuse program last year and is apparently clean now) Could have a bouce-back season - jnwood2517
Did he score over 30 goals in a season before ? Seems to me he did.
My bad 31 was his max. |

this makes so much sense i cant believe you guys arent seeing it.
LL and BS have been evaluating
they have flagged some burke nonis picks they dont particularly like or see a place for in their vision for the leafs.
this opens up contract slots
they sign a few guys on PTOs
move them at the deadline for picks and prospects more in line with what then envision for the leafs
by this time next summer those prospects will be replaced with players more in line with the new brain trust's of the leafs vision.
seriously LM.. look at this one with eyes on a year down the road - Dozzer
atleast someone gets it |

Imo, it doesn't seem like much of anything. Maybe a precursor to another move? They want 25 selections this coming draft? |

This walks like a contract clearing duck, talks like one and sounds like one too. I don't know how long the Leaf prospects contracts were, but assume just a year or two. Kinda surprised the Isles had enough contract slots to take this many useless plugs on. - BigDre
I don’t expect to see any of these prospects suit up for the isles in future, really this is just snow stocking Bridgeport and clearing grabner’s cap hit. I’m good with that because it adds flexibility for this season and grabner wasn’t going to be retained, and may have been on waivers after camp. |

LOL
Setoguchi for a 2nd rounder......yes that is magic.
Also, unless the team is doing real bad....I dont see the leafs unloading too many players like last year. |

I think calgary tried that last year. Didn't it end with nothing for them and setoguchi needing a camp invite to make another team?
They didn't have to give up value to sign him either.

Couldn't agree more. Mogilny was a horrible shell of his former self and Burke was much better as a Canuck too. What position was he again? Thank God for Booth cuz this list would look way worse without him. - Phenom
He scored 55 in Vancouver, never came close to that in Toronto. |

disagree here. we see every year at the deadline GMs get seduced by a guy having a hot year. even Glencross got traded for a second and third rounder in March. by August, he had to accept a professional tryout in Toronto. |

Higher g/60 than JT last year.
He'll get good minutes and a chance to shine. If he can have a solid season then we'll get a good return |
