It's the complete opposite of what they have been saying since the season ended. You can dissect it all you want, it contradicts what they told everyone.
- LeafMan

Absolutely it does.

Grabner is fast though. 3 on 3 ? Look the (frank) out

I feel like Garth Snow just acquired more, pound for pound...over what we did for the Kessel trade. In terms of actual skill. What kind of trade is this? I think a 3rd rounder would have been enough for some one like Grabner.
- ThePresident

which is all we might get at the trade deadline...this is so a step backwards.

This walks like a contract clearing duck, talks like one and sounds like one too. I don't know how long the Leaf prospects contracts were, but assume just a year or two. Kinda surprised the Isles had enough contract slots to take this many useless plugs on.
- BigDre

Apparently Leafs were up to 49. This clears another 4 - so they can perhaps sign some of these PTO players, who will be traded at the deadline for picks, or let go at year's end.

Clearly Hunter et al. were not high on these prospects. And they've had enough time to look at them.

The trade stinks of Babcock. He loves speedy guys. I wouldn't be surprised if he asked them to find a way to get him so he can try to turn him back into a serviceable player.

you are assuming allot, there is a reasaon these guys are on PTO, no other GM wanted to give them a contract...yet by the trade deadline, the GM's will be lining up to trade drafts picks for them???
- vermie22

some of these guys are gonna get a lot of ice time and the Leafs could find themselves playing from behind a lot. 1-2 of these guys could fall ass backwards into a 20-goal season and if they do, you'll find takers for 3/4 rounders. maybe even a second. the guy who thinks Grabner might bring a first is on glue.

Leafs just love old washed up former Canucks players.

Mogilny
Druken
Lumme
Raymond
Booth
Burke
Nonis
Santorelli

- Scooby_Doo

Couldn't agree more. Mogilny was a horrible shell of his former self and Burke was much better as a Canuck too. What position was he again? Thank God for Booth cuz this list would look way worse without him.

Great to see the new direction of the leafs.
Trade young prospects who may or may not be in the teams future plans for an often injured player.

This does open up some roster spots

100% correct.

There's a few promising prospects in there, a couple drafted in the 2nd round we've been lacking for years.

The contract space means nothing. To sign PTO's who will be traded at the deadline for 3-5 round picks, best case scenario.. 2nd rounders where we just traded prospects that were picked.

Bypassing developing our own players, to make room to sign dinosaurs who will be traded for picks to draft lower ceiling players than we just traded.

Brilliant. That's about as backwards as it gets.

- joel878

As Ive said since they sign Babcock...this team is not tanking. They will develop their young players and will put a competitive team on the ice.
I really liked Finn...not a huge fan of trade....but it opens up roster spots and Grabner can turn it around....he could be decent player.

But really who cares.....Go Jays Go!

Grabner will provide solid 2nd or 3rd line scoring and eat up a lot of short handed minutes for the team this year. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets back up to 25 goals and 40+ points this year with about 2 or 3 nice short handed goals. If he stays healthy he'll do more for the Toronto roster than most of the prospects shipped away in this trade.

Have to remember the drafting of Finn was during the Burke/Nonis stage.. maybe new management wasn't so fond of him. Also remember this was the year Toronto was crying for offensive forwards and the maple leafs drafted Reilly and Finn in rounds 1 and 2. Reilly worked out, its okay if Finn didn't.

Ok.. i will counter

say setoguchi makes the team and earns a 1 year contract

a second line with him and grabner gets put together

they enjoy some success getting top 6 mins

flipped at the deadline for a 2nd each

leafs get their seconds back.. drafted in line with what hunter and dubais are building

Apparently Setoguchi isn't drinking or smoking crack or whatever the heck else he was doing before. (he entered substance abuse program last year and is apparently clean now) Could have a bouce-back season

He said all the same things last year when the Flames brought him in... too many demons me thinks.
