Seeing way too many people saying grabner goes at the deadline for a 1st. I don't know if anyone will pay close to that. |

Who will be the top goalie?
Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer remain solid as friends and teammates, but the battle for minutes could, and should, be more intense than at any other time during their respective tenures in Toronto. Both are playing for new contracts, and while Bernier still has a grip on the No. 1 role, he will always have Reimer right in his rear-view mirror.
Someone forgot to tell the star. |

Ya thats exactly how the Blues got Steen and the Leafs got FUK ALL.. - Fruitcakenipple
He has been the difference in St. Louis to get them over the top too.
It would take a lot more than Steen to right the Leafs Ship, for sure. |

They got it for Setoguchi... Even with Franson dragging down his value! |

It depends on how well he plays, but he should get a 2nd if he's healthy. That doesn't look like fair value (Finn was a 2nd, etc.) at first glance, but this was really about those extra 4 contract slots.
Let's face it, those 5 guys have been pushed down the prospect pool by more skilled players that have been recently acquired. Management is set on getting a hold of even more prospects, which would push them further down the list, where they would just be in the way.
More will be going too, judging by the ridiculous number of players in camp.

Just looked at the preseason schedule. I figured that of the two split squad games the one in Toronto would be the one on TV. - burn
Both games will be on TV. Both home games will be televised in their own regions.

Well after the league has seen what the Leafs were willing to deal, I think a 1st rounder is automatic. |

Depends on the season he's having.
If he's in the 20-ish goals range, anything is possible. |

Or they suck balls because they drafted like morons!
Maybe yesterdays trade was to get rid of some of those picks that the new management don't want, while opening up contract space to sign PTO's that can be flipped for future picks. |

First they said now way we get Babcock -- done
Then they said no way we get Grabner --- done
And they think that we aren't getting Stamkos -- ha! I say ha! |

So essentially it's Gibson and Beck for Grabner
Plus getting rid of 3 fluff contracts that wont even hurt the Marlies
Good trade

Don't forget the handful of rookies that pushed those other guys out as well.
It wasn't just about the PTOs being flipped for picks. Some rookie tournament invitees came in and outplayed their TML-drafted counterparts. Management is rewarding those guys. Good on them.
The thing is, you can't fall in love with prospects just because, in the past, a couple random ones turned out to be great players a few years down the line. There are only 50 spots up for grabs, and far more players than that. Some are bound to fall through the cracks no matter what.
Everybody needs to stop thinking THEY know what is going to fix this (frank)ing disaster and let management work. |

That remains to be seen... The more I think about it, the more this looks like Lamoriello trying to put an NHL roster together, thinking that "it might work". Just like he did in NJ the past few years.

I'm sure there is a desire from ownership to compete at a level that is not league-worst. Hence the moves. The departure of those players yesterday was little more than a blip. There are plenty of guys out there more deserving of contracts that currently don't have one. No love lost. |

No everybody has to stop thinking they will get a boat load of picks for discarded players nobody wanted because of the arrogance of Hunter and Dubas. |

I might buy that if it was more than this one deal.
He already had an NHL roster together. In fact, there were about 5 too many guys.
Bringing in Grabner for any reason just doesn't scream "short term fix at expense of youth" to me, like some others are suggesting.
To me, the guys we moved out were outplayed by others. Sparks looked pretty good at the rookie tourney and they wanted to give him a shot on the Marlies. Joly, Skladnichenko, Brouillard (despite getting hurt) plus guys like Vail and Rodewald who were already Marlies also were pretty noticeable at the tournament. Management must have liked what they saw there.
Plus I think there is a slight bias toward their own acquisitions vs the crew obtained by Burke/Nonis. or it would seem that way |
