100% correct.
There's a few promising prospects in there, a couple drafted in the 2nd round we've been lacking for years.
The contract space means nothing. To sign PTO's who will be traded at the deadline for 3-5 round picks, best case scenario.. 2nd rounders where we just traded prospects that were picked.
Bypassing developing our own players, to make room to sign dinosaurs who will be traded for picks to draft lower ceiling players than we just traded.
Brilliant. That's about as backwards as it gets. - joel878

weren't we going to have a lot more contract space open up once a bunch of the junior guys went back down?
Had pretty high hopes for Verhaege and Nilsson - Feeling Glucky?
Verhaege and Beck are the ones I'll miss. Gibson gone means Sparks opened some eyes. good for him. |

It was at 49 with the players going back to junior. They had one spot left up until today. |

That is going backwards.
So much for the brain trust theory.
Stupidity that unites them all - LeafMan
well - perhaps not.
after seeing Finn in the prospects mini-tourney ... I don't think that he showed much... and he clearly has confidence issues.
Verhaege ? part of previous regime and tweener... not really a guy who projects top 6 nor a guy who has physical attributes to push out incumbents...
Tom Nilsson - projection??? my guess Valiev replaces him on the depth chart easily
Taylor Beck - who knows?
Perhaps this deal is a pre-cursor to the Leafs taking on a similarly sized group of players from another organization - in exchange for a "hefty contract" guy!
most important point - for of Habitant loving brethren is that the Leafs have now shrunk the size camp roster by a net 4... therefore the Leafs automatically be better this coming season |

It's the complete opposite of what they have been saying since the season ended. You can dissect it all you want, it contradicts what they told everyone. |

I don't mind this. All the prospects were weak, outside Finn -- who they've been looking at for a while now. Clearly they didn't feel like he was rising along a steep enough curve.
This clears contracts so they can sign some of these PTO players -- EACH of which will be traded at the deadline for picks. As will Grabner. Clearly they're just clearing the shelves for restocking.
No reason to get upset. None of these guys were going to be anything but supporting players. - jnwood2517
you are assuming allot, there is a reasaon these guys are on PTO, no other GM wanted to give them a contract...yet by the trade deadline, the GM's will be lining up to trade drafts picks for them??? |

Great to see the new direction of the leafs.
Trade young prospects who may or may not be in the teams future plans for an often injured player.
This does open up some roster spots

I feel like Garth Snow just acquired more, pound for pound...over what we did for the Kessel trade. In terms of actual skill. What kind of trade is this? I think a 3rd rounder would have been enough for some one like Grabner. |

This walks like a contract clearing duck, talks like one and sounds like one too. I don't know how long the Leaf prospects contracts were, but assume just a year or two. Kinda surprised the Isles had enough contract slots to take this many useless plugs on. |
