They are going to end up signing that goalie stiff they brought to rookie camp from Kingston, wasting another contract, just wait and see. - LeafMan
probably true... but perhaps they sign him to Marlies/AHL contract - I don't believe those count against the pro-contract Leaf count. |

Clearly the Leafs, who have looked at these prospects day-in and day-out for much longer than you have, disagree about their value.
A prospect isn't a vague, intangible thing. It's a person. The Leaf brass didn't think these people would have become good hockey players, and would rather give their contracts to other players with higher ceilings. - jnwood2517
Fair enough, if the key is in assessment, and they just didn't like what they saw.. That's fair.
But even under that logic, this boils down to the equivalent of a prospect dump. I can't help but feel that trying to develop said prospects and turning them into something more than a 5 for 1 dump would be more beneficial, especially considering they've long preached that as the plan.
But like you said, I'm not GM. I'm just taking their words as what they are. Have to assume there's some sense to it under it all, or they'd be nothing more than the last 40 years of management groups we've put our faith in. Right?

exactly
none of the guys they traded were shoe ins by any stretch
also
how many burke/nonis era picks are actually playing on the leafs?
kadri and rielly? i dont think there is another.. i could be wrong - Dozzer
I did a quick check - it's actually worse than you could imagine.
Burkie's first Leafs draft was 2009.
Kadri in the 1st round.
Jerry D'Amigo in the 6th: 31 NHL games, 1 goal, 2 assists.
Jesse Blacker and Jamie Devane have combined for 3 NHL games.
Nobody else has played a game.
2010 draft: 28 total NHL games.
2011 draft: 30 total NHL games (and that's with 2 1st round picks)
2012 draft: Morgan Rielly. No other player has played an NHL game (still hopeful ona few though: Brown, Loov. Finn if you want to be a party-pooper today).
2013 draft (beginning of Nonis era): 0 NHL games. Gauthier, Verhaeghe, Herzog, Bibeau, Andreas Johnson. I'm not exactly drooling.
2014-15: not fair to judge yet.

definitely! I love Panik. The only reason he was let go by Tampa is because there was no room for him, not because he was bad. I like how he played last year. I said this before, he reminds me of a younger Kulemin. Lays the good hit, takes a hit, can pot in a few goals, etc. - MCharisma91
My buddy is a huge TB fan and he was telling me when the leafs claimed him off waivers that Cooper had said that he was the most talented of all their wonderkids in Syracuse but he just had consistency issue. |

I actually like what they're doing overall, but the current NHL roster is pretty funny to look at. Outside of a handful of players, it's literally a bunch of guys that other teams don't really want. And the best part is that some of these guys will get a decent amount of minutes and PP time and will put up respectable point totals, making them attractive to other teams again and possible to flip for picks/prospects. |

So is it (frank)ing quality over (frank)ing quantity or wtf.
We trade better picks for more picks - then trade 5 for this (frank)ing guy.

Young rebuilding team - AdamFrench
Obviously that is not supposed to represent the team of the future.
This is exactly what Devellano did in Detroit when they first started to turn the organization around. He came right out and said it. Detroit basically just found guys on short term contracts to occupy spots for a few years.
I just feel Finn maybe didn't get a fair shot to develop at all.

This may sound bizarre, but bear with me here:
Much like Kessel, it's not the Goat's fault that he was taken in the 1st round.
Leafs Nation needs to lay off of this kid. His upside may only be a 3rd line checker, but what the hell, he's our 3rd line checker prospect, so we need to stop calling him a stiff because he isn't the next Connor McDavid.
Let's see how he does on the Marlies this year. |

I find it hard to take anyone seriously who tries to pull out this kind of logic. If you can even call it that. Placing the failures of people who no longer work for the organization, at the feet of people who currently work there, makes zero sense.
Dubas, Hunter, etc. are in year one of their plan to rebuild. Look at it like that. They took all of last year to evaluate this organization and make their assessments. They concluded these players weren't worth the contracts, and would rather roll the dice again with other players. |

They gave up 5 prospects for a chance at drafting 4 in later rounds if teams take these guys, it is what it all boils down to. A slim gambling chance. |

just think of the opportunities for the Canucks to add at the trade-deadline - and then sign these guys next year for more than they're worth.
