Hindsight is 20/20, but I don't think anyone, at least not me, would have thought any less of him if he spoke up. You're not doing yourself any favors, especially to the team, going out there in agonizing pain and hindering your teammates

If he came out and publicly stated that he was in pain, the Philly media would have ripped him for being "soft" and not playing "Flyers hockey." People don't realize that not every player is going to be Bobby Clarke, Dave Poulin, or Kimmo Timonen. Hockey players are noted for having unbelievable pain tolerances, and that's just how it's always been. But he could have had discussions with Hextall/Berube behind closed doors if he'd wanted to.

A healthy, hungry, productive Umberger is quite an addition to the Flyers. Add in Gagner, Read, (maybe VLC?) and this could be a real solid core of forwards playing for pride, contracts, and a spot in the playoffs.

Can't wait til the season starts.

You're definitely right about that. Motivated players working hard together could work wonders.

What I don't understand is how the coaches and trainers, who interacted with him on a DAILY basis, couldn't see that his skating was labored and that his play was CLEARY suffering. It was obvious to all of us for crissakes!!

Let's not bring Dan Cleary into this.

The Umberger situation doesn't reflect well on him or the team but hopefully it will lead to more open communication between Flyers players and management going forward.

Sports and injuries kinda go hand in hand. Nothing to be done about it.

Let's just hope the six months he's had can make a difference. Hard to imagine though. The Umberger that was absolutely awesome on the boards here in his first go round was a long time ago now. Where was the due diligence on this before the trade? Some Flyers brass really wanted Hartnell gone to have made that deal.

Yupper. The Flyers could really surprise this coming season. I'm really looking forward to it.

Yessir, though while healthy and hungry seem to be givens, 'productive' is something we have to hope for.

With ya there. If Read can return to 20 goal form, Umberger pop in 15/35 and Gagner 15/45, I'd be very happy.

You have to wonder why the Flyers would trade for a guy with a herniated disk. I understand why the Flyers made the move (shorter contract), but you really have to wonder if they knew of his physical problems.

Did that dead squirrel jump off Didinger's head on the post game last night?

It was nice to see that during halftime, someone actually bothered to inform the Eagles that preseason was over and this game actually counts.

How can you come out utterly flat in the season opener? Pathetic.

As long as MacDonald only scores 5 goals for the opposing team I'd be happy.

Not sure if this was shared or not:

http://bleacherreport.com...s-own-draft-picks/page/23

Takes the NHL teams and makes a roster composed of draft picks only. It's flawed a little, but interesting IMHO IMO. Horrible goaltending...

Forwards

James van Riemsdyk—Claude Giroux—Justin Williams
Patrick Sharp—Jeff Carter—Steve Downie
Patrick Maroon—Sean Couturier—Dainius Zubrus
Scott Laughton—Mike Richards—Zac Rinaldo
Spares: Nick Cousins, Tye McGinn

Defence

Luca Sbisa—Dennis Seidenberg
Samuel Morin—Ivan Provorov
Shayne Gostisbehere—Robert Hagg
Spare: Oliver Lauridsen

Goal

Jakub Kovar
Joacim Eriksson

Am I supposed to feel bad or sorry for Umberger?
The guy has been making excuses for 3 years and at the time of basically Hextall's only horrible move to date we traded a quality scoring forward and team leader for a guy who the entire league knew was going to be bought out and can no longer skate.
Does anyone really believe Umberger is going to magically get better this season?
Umberger if you don't want to be called trash, retire

I don't think there is any excuse for not letting a team know how banged up you are when you are basically useless. You are effectively wasting a roster spot. He should have bowed out earlier if he knew it was that bad.
