More and more I'm starting to believe you're right, we just don't respect our stars. It surprises me even that Josh Donaldson is getting the love he is, but it's been only a year. We somehow managed to run Robbie Alomar out of town after six years.

Here, in a nutshell, is everything that is wrong with the Toronto media and fans:

http://www.thestar.com/sp...l-kessel-comparisons.html

LONDON, ONT.—The Phil Kessel trade has managed to tie Kasperi Kapanen and Tyler Biggs at the hip. For Biggs, the trade was good news, a chance at a fresh start.

For Kapanen, there may be a downside. Kapanen is certainly happy to be part of an organization that is trying to build with youth and skill. But Kessel has historically cast a long shadow.

Tyler Seguin, now of the Dallas Stars, still answers questions about being one of the draft picks the Leafs gave up to get Kessel from Boston in 2009.

Now it may be Kapanen, as the most significant player the Maple Leafs got in return for goal-scoring star in the six-player trade, who may yet end up being compared to Kessel.

“I don’t know how many times I have to answer that question,” said Kapanen. “I’m me. I’m Kasperi Kapanen. I was in the trade. There were other people in the trade. I don’t think you need to compare us. If you want to, that’s fine.

“I’m here to be me and play my style of game.”

Leaf fans expect him to be a star. He is a good player who needs a good coach to get the most out of him.

absolutely he should be there.

I just hope that the organization doesn't overlook some of the old guys... I'd love to see Red Kelly up there - particularly with some of those guys getting up in age. George Armstrong. Keon( I understand the issue)... but frankly they should put him out there... if he doesn't want to be - he should be specifically asked that question publicly - end all the nonsense. Paul Henderson.

- BorjeFan4Ever

Armstrong already there.

Sundin:
Adjusted Goals
Career NHL 599 (19)

Adjusted Assists
Career NHL 811 (27)

Adjusted Points
Career NHL 1410 (16)

- mykokes

I was never a huge Sundin fan..but the guy was one of the best every year for a dozen years. All Class.. I would think he is exactly what you would want to honor.

the leafs made some long runs, and for a period had played the most playoff games in the NHL while he was Captain.

Toronto is not an easy place to play and he never let it show..hearing his comments now..it got to him.

I understood what you meant but he still won't be eligible to play in the AHL in 2016/2017. You have to be 20 before December 31st of the season in order to play in the AHL. So he will still have to play 2 more years of junior if he doesn't make the NHL.

I think they should tweak the rule for high draft picks. Leafs will be in the same boat as Tampa was with Drouin this year. Probably could of used some seasoning in the A but had absolutely nothing left to gain by playing in Junior so was forced into the NHL.

- HealthyScratch6

Maybe Mathews had the right idea this year by playing in Europe.
Is the rule relating to junior eligibility ONLY for the AHL, or all professional leagues that aren't the NHL?

I'm glad the kid said this... but it does seem a little pre-mature that he's getting testy about it. Someone better inform him that he is going to be interviewed repeatedly by such intellectual giants as SImmons, Berger etc... he better learn to expect dumb questions where the responses are interpreted whatever the doink asking them wants to hear.

He should have said "I'm not like Kessel at all, I'm in shape, I don't like hot dogs or burgers, and I'm not rooming with Bozie".

The poor bastard is a walking dead man.

Kessel is going to light it up this year, tapping in 6 inch putts off of passes from Crosby.

"So Kapanen, you were traded for a guy who won the Richard Trophy - do you already feel like you have let down Leafs fans? Is it fair to say you are a crushing failure?"

awesome... I didn't realize that he had been selected. Met him several times (he lived in the same neighborhood) during the 90s... a very nice gentleman - great - always had time for the kids.

Sundin was great and awesome for the leafs.....I just dont think of him as a legend. But I guess he's best we've got.

Its because not only is Donaldson the best player on the team and at his postion in the league, he is quite possibly the best player in the league period.
Sundin was never the best center in the league......not sure if we won an MVP or not.
I dont recall

But the Leafs have never had the best player in the league or position.

I think it is just you.

Here's the logic behind my thinking:

The greatest honour a player can receive to recognize his contributions to the game is the Hockey Hall of Fame. It is only for the cream of the crop, the elite of the elite - the greatest players from all 30 teams.

So logically speaking, a team deciding to honour only their own players would be a step below that honour. You don't have to be the greatest in the league - merely the greatest to have played for that team.

Sundin is in the HHOF.

So not really a stretch for him to also be honoured by the Leafs, no?

Pretty sure Matt Cooke (assuming he plays this year) has this wrapped up already.
Oh wait... you meant Richard with the emphasis on the "chard" like the French pronunciation, not on the "Rich" part....

His style of game better be more than he showed this past weekend or it will be 2 years of those kind of questions followed by a long mediocre career in the K.

I'm not going to lie to you, Aethsie: I think the Penguins bent us over a Zamboni on that trade.

I've already written off Harrington as nothing more than a 4-6 guy.

But hey, we only gave up one of the elite scorers in the league. Those guys are easy to come by, right?

Hell, I'm sure Dubas can turn that Penguins 2nd round pick into 2 4th rounders, and get all the scoring we need...

It's the delusions that unite us all.

Yeah, the Leafs got bent over.

They sold low on Kessel just to get him out of the locker-room. I think it will end up being a worse "hockey trade", than the one that brought Kessel here. I have zero expectations that Harrington will even have an NHL career.
