expect prospects like Kapenen who are late 1sts (and on) to be held back until they are 21-22 for the most part. - senstroll
That would be good. I think 22 is a good age unless a player is exceptional. Nylander will likely be in the NHL before then, and maybe even Marner.

Sorry dude. I understand what you're saying, I just disagree with calling a guy a bust so soon. I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just a big leap to take on a 19 yo. Let's just agree he needs a lot of work, and if this is what he brings to the table in camp or in the AHL, then yes, he's headed in the wrong direction. |

How do you feel about Finn? I'm really iffy on him now, and its not just that he spent time in the ECHL last season. |

I am hoping he was one of the "less motivated" guys in this tournament as he is already considered a top prospect. A year in AHL will tell us a lot more.

Aetherial said it, I think we expected too much from him but he was injured last year, so maybe he just needs more time. |

First impressions on Marner: Bruce, so far I think you're right. He's going to juniors. He didn't look right playing alongside Nylander at all....he was on for a lot of goals for but wasn't really active in the play. Very hesitant. Maybe in real camp playing with NHLers we'll see more of what he's about.
Nylander: Was by far the best player. Everything seemed to just slow down when he had the puck, and he was in full control. Pretty obvious he is already a top player in the AHL. He's going to make it real tough in camp for sure. I think we drafted a top line player with this one.
Kapenen looked fine in the offensive zone, but was lost in the defensive zone.
Valiev looked steady. He got beat on that one play but Finn did him no favours with the trailer.
Finn looked lost. - mykokes
I thought Marner had a few good shifts... but overall inconsistent. Too much watching the other guys in my opinion - but understandable given age, size and maturity(lack thereof).
Kapanen needs a serious injection of testosterone ... was totally on the perimeter from what I saw... unlike the two Russians.. who were buzzing the whole night.
Agreed on Valiev... and on Finn (unfortunately). Finn looked very tentative.

If I was ranking the top three forwards at the tournament, it would be Nylander, Rodewald and Soshnikov. - LeafMan
I agree. Unfortunately I think Rodewald is ECHL bound. Could be wrong though.
Nylander is fun to watch. Soshnikov I'm hoping is a good one. |

He easily could play in the NHL - poohcrumbs
Not this year. Keep him in the AHL.
I havent cared about anything leaf related since the draft.....but did I hear Sundin will be a part of Legends row? Great player but is he really what the leafs consider to be "legend"? Leafs keep lowering that bar.
Another great weekend for the Jays....so glad to finally have a real sports team with actual stars to cheer for in this city.
They must either sweep or get 2 out of 3 against Atlanta. |

Kapanen looks exactly like what he was advertised in Pittsburgh. A top level prospect that has made no progression and is on his way to becoming a bust. - Aetherial
To me he looked more like a guy that got a lot bigger in the off season, and isn't used to his own frame. He looked a lot bigger than I expected.
Marner looked smaller than I expected (and I expected him to look small). If he doesn't pack on some size this year and off-season, he'd be better off playing in the AHL next year.
Valiev, Dermot, and Brouillard were all impressive on the blue line. Thought some of the un-pronounceable named Russians looked good too.
All that said, this tournament means little other than a skills show for the young guys. Can't expect them to play like a team with all the no contract invites.

I think Finn is destined for the ECHL again this year. No way he beats out Percy, Harrington, Brennan Loov or Granberg and I also think he's behind Nilsson and Valiev. |

Marner wouldn't be eligible for the AHL next year. It's either NHL or back to Junior. |
