Morning Leafers. .....
So after watching the LeafsTV replay of the first rookie game, here's what I came away with:
Nylander will be a force. Noticeable and dominant every time he was on the ice
Dermott was very impressive. Smooth, slick and fast. Decent shot too. Rielly 2.0
Gauthier is still slow and has next to zero offensive instinct. Looked good on the draw.
Valiev is very steady, calm, safe and smart in both ends.
Soshnikov is super skilled and confident. Could be the breakout Marlie and first one
called up.
Kapanen: See Soshnikov. Great hands and knows where to position himself.
Dzierkals is quick, confident and goes into the dirty areas.
Marner looked tentative and nervous, tried to dish the puck too much too quickly,
but easy to tell the skill is there.
So far I'm overall impressed with the kids. Good sign. - Phenom
Good assessment. I think the Marner thing is just about adapting to the bigger, faster play at the next level. I think that is one of the main reasons for the rookie tournament. The pace and physical play of an NHL camp and exhibition schedule is far above anything some of these kids have ever experienced. Marner will adapt and he will be fine by end of camp. The Leafs have made it pretty clear that they think he will be in London for another year.

You may be right but one of the first penalty kills he had the puck in their end and was very hard to knock off the puck.He is no Nylander but hes very hard to handle along the boards.

Size differential will do that. Eventually though, if/when he's playing with men, that won't be as much of an asset. He needs some offensive drive, take it hard to the net, and make things happen that way.

I agree he needs to step up this year!
I see flashes of good with his pk and fo ability though.Hes a third fourth line center role player.Theres a reason he makes Team Canada every year.

likely why hes starting in Orlando so he can play top line minutes and learn that offensive drive, I m hoping he turns into Martin Hanzal

Not enough offensive awareness to be a Hanzal imo. Reminds me more of a Marcel Goc or more accurately David Steckel right now. Serviceable definitely but the ceiling is pretty low.

11 - 15 goals, 30 - 40 points ? - poohcrumbs
I'll give him 15 in the minors. <10 in the NHL. Just looks like a prototypical 4th liner with excellent PK and face off ability, which will increase his playing time by 3-4 mins. He won't get many offensive zone starts. Maybe if his skating was better, but he looks slow. That will only be more noticeable at the NHL level.

You watching that Legends Row thing? So not a fan of Andy Frost. Wish that guy from Maple Leaf Gardens was doing the MC.

As much as I hate iggy for being a troll I hope that guy is not banned for to long. Very knowlegeable but definitely a piece of poop. I do hope he's allowed back in some way I do enjoy an intelligent argument from time to time. - HealthyScratch6
Sorry, guy is an idiot and a complete waste of space.

... clearly a controller disconnected.
Leafs aren't going to get a single NHL player of significance from the Kessel trade, but they WILL be paying for Kessel to be a top 10 scorer for the Pens for years to come.
